Alliance Road Funding Principles; Review House and Senate Plans

With a flurry of activity, promises, and rumors floating around the road funding debate in Lansing, the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance released five principles it would like to see incorporated into the state's road funding debate.

 

The principles reflect the northern Michigan business community's desire to see a balanced solution between cuts, reallocation of funding, efficiencies in government, and new revenue dedicated to roads. Here's an overview of the Alliance road priorities.

Chamber Opposes Petitions for Hydraulic Fracturing Ban

Safe and reliable energy production is critical to Michigan's economic future. That's why the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce opposes efforts to place a ban on hydraulic fracturing in front of Michigan voters in the 2016 election cycle. The Chamber board took action in June urging Michigan voters not to sign petitions by The Committee to Ban Fracking in Michigan being circulated across the state including Northern Michigan. Throw Your Hat in the Ring

Are you interested in local government and politics, but not sure how to get involved? Join us here at the Chamber on Tuesday, July 14 from 9 - 11 a.m. for a Local Government Candidate Seminar.

 

This free program will cover nominating petition procedures, building a campaign, media relations and the responsibilities of holding public office. Speakers will include Traverse City Clerk and Chamber Young Professional Benjamin Marentette, city Commissioner Gary Howe and former commissioner and campaign manager Matthew Schmidt.

Pints & Politics on Tap

Chamber members who want to connect with their local, state and federal officials in a comfortable, informal setting will want to be at Pints & Politics, a new Chamber legislative advocacy program offering our business community access to key decision-makers. It was rescheduled from last month to our new hosts at Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City. The sessions include:

  • Monday, August 24with State and Federal officials
  • Thursday, Sept. 24 with Traverse City officials
  • Monday, Oct. 19 with Grand Traverse County officials

Chamber Backs Reset of TIF 2  

The City of Traverse City's tax increment financing (TIF) district, known as TIF 2, will be nearing the end of its successful 30 year run in August. The question of what to do next is before city officials and has yet to be resolved.

Alliance Finds Success in Budget Negotiations 
The new state budget for 2015-16 was approved by state lawmakers and signed by Gov. Rick Snyder last month. The Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance fared well with its budget priorities, as spelled out in the Northern Michigan Business Blog.
