Unplug Your Kids This Summer & "Experience 231"
A recent news story reported data that shocked us: Children's weight gain TRIPLES over the summer. Though the original research was published in 2007, things haven't gotten better. A more recent 5-year study of children entering kindergarten, published in 2013, found these changes in children's BMI (Body Mass Index) : a 1.2% drop during the school year and a 5.2% increase over the summer.
At the Healthy Places for Healthy People conference held earlier this month in East Lansing, national and state speakers made the point that healthy weight in children - and adults - is a community health issue. In the greater Grand Traverse region a collaboration of parks and recreation units, tourism and outdoor activity-based non-profits have put together a website and smart phone app to help families and individuals find activities that promote outdoor play and learning.
To find out what's available in the region visit experience231.org. Unplug and have fun out there!
