Human Resources Workshop 04/03/14

The CVNA will be holding a Human Resources workshop (5 Things people misunderstand about employment law)


WHEN:   Thursday, April 3rd, 2014

TIME:     8:00 - 9:00 a.m.

WHERE: Philanthropy Center (3rd Floor US Bank Building 425 Cedar                  Street, Waterloo)


Please join the CVNA and guest speaker Lynn Smith on April 3rd as she will discuss the 5 misunderstandings of employment law.


Lynn Smith, a partner with Swisher & Cohrt, P.L.C. has been practicing law with the firm since May 2011.  Prior to that she was a partner with Dutton, Braun, Staack & Hellman, P.L.C. She is engaged in the General Practice of law, including but not limited to Employment Law, Business Law, Real Estate Law, Wills, and Probate. She is licensed to practice law in both State and Federal Courts in Iowa. She is also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.


In 2001 she was appointed by the Governor to serve as a member of the Iowa Title Guaranty Board. She is a member of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Iowa Bar Association. She has also had the opportunity to speak to professional associations about various topics, including Employment Law issues and many other legal topics.

Deadline to register is Tuesday, April 1, 2014.  This event is free for CVNA members.  Non-members may attend for $40.  All non-members will be invoiced following the event.

 Emerging Stars: A Children's Giving Event


When:    Saturday, March 29, 10 a.m. to noon

Where:  UNI's Human Performance Center, Cedar Falls

Cost:      $5 per child

Bring the kids in your life to learn about giving. Kids will learn ways they can make the world a better place. Adults are asked to learn and participate with the kids. Registration includes activities, a copy of "The Giving Book" by Ellen Sabin, and a sack lunch. Recommended for kindergarten through 4th grade.

Nominations Please - Deadline 3/20/14
UNI Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Student Association is part of a national network that transforms today's students into tomorrow's nonprofit leaders by helping them gain experience, skills, professionalism and certification within the nonprofit sector. As students preparing to enter the nonprofit sector, the UNI Nonprofit Leadership Alliance would like to recognize the outstanding contributions of local nonprofits and their staff.  Please complete a nomination so we honor your efforts.  
Deadline for nominations is March 20, 2014. 


Awards will be presented at the Cedar Valley Nonprofit Award luncheon.


When:   Wednesday, April 16, 2014 from 12:00 - 1:30 pm  
Where:  UNI Commons Ballroom
Cost:    $25.00.  Winners will receive a complimentary ticket.

CVNA Membership News....
Membership renewal applications for April 1, 2014 through March 31, 2015 were mailed out this past week. Please remember to renew earlier and your name will be eligible for a mini scholarship.  Winners of the two mini scholarships will be announced after the March 31st deadline.   Look forward to another successful year.
