Who Says Boards Can't Dance in Leading Strategic Change?

Too many board members not only do not hit the governance "floor" with smooth moves, they barely crawl for some time.  All too often, it results in organizations losing much of the benefit that knowledgeable, skilled board members could produce and all too frequently many members fade away because of disappointed expectations.

Boards that truly govern at a high level take firm accountability for their own effectiveness.  The most you can do is to, if the board is determined to lead and govern effectively, is to help track the music and be a helpful dance partner.  Together, in this workshop, let's set the music and pick the dance steps.

"This session is specially designed to help staff leaders consider how to optimize the skills of board members."

National Service is a "No Brainer"

We invite you to read Governor Terry E. Branstad's comments about volunteerism and national service.  Iowa's governor is this week's guest blogger for  The Huffington Post!

This post is part of a series produced by The Huffington Post and the Franklin Project at the Aspen Institute to recognize the power of national service, in conjunction with the National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11th and the 20th anniversary of the signing of the AmeriCorps legislation on September 20th.  The Franklin Project is a policy program at the Aspen Institute working to create a 21st century national service system that challenges all young people to give at least one year of full-time service to their country.

New GrantCraft Podcast Series
Podcasts are relatively new territory for us at GrantCraft.  We're excited to share with you the first of four episodes from our new podcast series Shaping the Future of Philanthropy: Voices from Next Gen Donors. In this month-long series, we explore the values, motivations, and stories of the up-and-coming generation of philanthropists.

Give a listen to our first episode:  Next Gen Donors: Who Are They?

We'll release the others each Wednesday this month on our new podcast page , so make sure you give each a listen. We'll also have a blog with each episode on  nextgendonors.org; after you listen to each episode, leave your thoughts in the blog comments.

In other GrantCraft news, we've recently shared guest posts on our blog on leveraging social media and developmental evaluation, and have contributed guest posts on philanthropy trends and resources for new funders on other blogs. We also reread our guide Using Competitions and RFPs and found it newly helpful.
