Welcome to Cedar Valley Connections, a newsletter to connect the leaders of the nonprofit sector. 

Fun Innovation WorkShop - August 1, 2013
Bainstorming Meetings and Five Other Myths of Innovation  
It seems that innovation and ingenuity is in the DNA of every nonprofit organization.  Nonprofits use innovation to stretch resources, to serve needs of special clients, and to meet community demands as they emerge.

However, nonprofits haven't had many opportunities to think about how innovation functions in our organizations;  or to consider how to innovate, more quickly.


Come to this session to begin a discussion about how you can support systematic innovation in your organization. During the session we'll uncover common myths of the innovation process, and we'll consider what each of us can do to encourage innovation in our organizations


The session will be offered by Stacy Van Gorp.  Stacy is the Executive Director at the McElroy Trust and recently completed her doctoral research, focusing on innovation in the nonprofit sector.

YMCA of Black Hawk County Has Child Care Openings



The Black Hawk County YMCA

Child Development Center in partnership with the Waterloo Community Schools Voluntary Preschool Program, has openings available in their preschool classroom.


The preschool curriculum is part of the Y's full-day licensed childcare program for children 4 years of age. Center hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additional benefits include weekly swim lessons, an indoor playground, and meals. The YMCA is a QRS level 2 facility.


"We know that choosing childcare is one of the most important decisions a parent can make", said Darlene Gebel, Childcare Director. "The Y provides a safe and educational environment for child to learn fundamental skills, develop healthy relationships, and build self-resilience".

RMHC-Eastern Iowa Grants to Help Local Children
Area non-profits can now apply for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa (RMHC of Eastern Iowa) grant. Looking to improve the health and well-being of children beyond the walls of the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City, RMHC of Eastern Iowa will award over $35,000 to local organizations dedicated to the same mission.


The RMHC of Eastern Iowa Grants Program aims to make an impact on children's lives by awarding grants to qualified non-profit organizations assisting thousands of children outside of the Ronald McDonald House. Over the course of its five year existence with RMHC of Eastern Iowa, this program has impacted over 17,000 children that never had the need to step inside the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City.


Applications for the grants are due no later than  

September 3, 2013.
