Greetings!
|
The children sponsored through the Ugandan Lambs Association represent the future leaders of Uganda! When we look at their sweet young faces, it is hard to imagine that, in a few short years, they will be pastors, politicians, business men/women, teachers, lawyers, or even the president of their country. Our goal is to empower them to become self-sustaining by providing a quality education, nutritious meals, adequate medical care and a firm spiritual foundation. Praise God for His never failing faithfulness to provide for these precious children!
The average income in the area of Uganda where the Ugandan Lambs orphanages are located (Kayunga and Namugongo) is $400.00 per year. Even children with working parents do not have much opportunity to receive an education. Orphaned children essentially have no chance to attend school unless they receive outside sponsorship. Orphaned children can fall prey to numerous evil influences (drug trafficking, human exploitation, prostitution, etc.). Ugandan Lambs is providing a safe haven for 70 children who would otherwise be on the streets!
Some of our older children are currently not sponsored because, for various reasons, their sponsors are unable to continue to provide financial support. God has been faithful to provide, through the general fund, enough money to allow the unsponsored children to continue their education, however; without ongoing sponsorship, they do not receive the feeling of really being loved and wanted by someone who is important in their lives. This months featured child, Geoffrey UL#017, is a friendly, energetic, teenager who has been in the program for approximately 8 years. He is currently without a sponsor. See Geoffrey's biography below and consider how you might partner with us to rewrite his story and allow him to know that someone 10,000 miles away cares enough to give him the opportunity to succeed, to give him hope for the future and the ability to realize some of his dreams.
Prayer partners, office volunteers, bookkeepers, sponsors, and general fund supporters are needed. All help is very much appreciated. Together we can make a difference in one of the poorest countries in the world!
In His service,
Ruth and Sam Sebabi

PHYSICAL WELLBEING
NUTRITION
We are frequently asked: "What do the children eat". It is important for us to provide the children with well balanced meals that are economical, enjoyable, and nutritious.
The mainstay of the Ugandan diet is a banana based dish locally known as MATOKE. Green bananas are wrapped in palm leaves and steamed over a charcoal cooker until the bananas are tender. Matoke is generally served with a peanut (ground nut) or fish based sauce. Since bananas are plentiful in Uganda, this is a very economical dish that will feed a number of people.
Yams, potatoes, pineapple, sweet bananas, papaya, watermelon, and other local fruits are served almost daily. Meat and chicken are prepared for special occasions since they are relatively expensive.
Rice is relatively expensive and is not considered a daily staple food item. Ugandan rice has small stones in it that need to be picked out by hand before it is cooked, making it a time consuming dish to prepare.
The older children assist with meal preparation, serving, and clean up. The meals are prepared in a small cooking area that is separate from the main house. Meals are served outside due to limited space inside. Adults and children sit on woven mats scattered in various locations throughout the compound.
One of our goals is to increase the amount of produce grown at each of the houses to allow them to become more self-sustaining.

SPIRITUAL WELLBEING
LOCAL CHURCH
The church in Kayunga (above) is a short walk from the children's home. The children are required to attend church regularly where they are encouraged to participate in church activities. Several of the Ugandan Lambs children are in the choir.
CHILD EVANGELICAL FELLOWSHIP
We are very please to have been in contact with the Ugandan Chapter of Child Evangelical Fellowship (CEF). Volunteers from Kampala will be meeting with the children at each of the houses during the summer school break.
They will be developing a program to help each of the children to have the opportunity to grow in their spiritual walk.
CEF in the United States does Good News Clubs in the public schools and has helped millions of children world wide to develop a firm foundation and Christian world view.
It will be very exciting to see the positive influence of CEF on the children's lives.

Although Geoffrey has had a very difficult childhood, he has a ready smile, infectious sense of humor, and a generous heart. He frequently volunteers to assist with projects and has demonstrated definite leadership potential.
