"Growth Mindset"

Orchard Hills Elementary students presented on "Growth Mindset" last night at the regular meeting of the Willard Board of Education.  Lee Ann Peterson and Devon Bowen brought several students to discuss how they approached learning.  These 4th grade 10 year old students were sharing leadership principles that many adults don't understand.

"Failure is not an endpoint"  That was a quote that one of these young people shared.  They shared about risk, growth, belief, and helping others.  None of these core principles of success can be found in the Common Core Curriculum however, they demonstrate that Willard teachers help students learn how to be successful in life not only how to score well on a high stakes state achievement test.  I am proud of these ladies and how they are leading young people toward successful habits that will last a life time!!!

Have a great weekend!

I'm pretty sure the Tigers have been going non-stop preparing for their district and state tournaments. Here is an update:

Tigers competed in the Class 3 District 3 tournament this past Friday and Saturday.  Willard went into the day with 9 wrestlers seeded in the top 6 of their respected weight classes.  In order to qualify for the state tournament they would have to finish in the top four of their weight class.  Competing with 15 other teams, the tigers new they had some pretty good draws but would have to compete really well in order to put themselves in the best position to be successful.  Friday started off well with the tigers winning the matches they were supposed to and a few tigers upsetting a couple of wrestlers they weren't supposed to.  Going into Saturday, the tigers had done what they were supposed to do in order to give themselves their best chance.  Tigers placed 7 wrestlers in the semifinals with 4 of them making the finals and automatically earning a trip to the state tournament.  That left 5 tigers in the "bubble match" (win and you qualify, lose and you don't), unfortunately for the Tigers we were only victorious in 2 of the 5 matches.  That would move the tigers state qualifier total to 6 and leave 3 tigers heartbroken.  Not to hang their heads as each of the tigers that competed help their team finish in 2nd place and bring home a team district plaque for only the second time in school history.  Each Tiger wrestler had a hand in the accomplishment and we are very proud of all of them.

Of the 6 Tigers that Qualified we had 3 District Champions, Niko Chavez, Kyle Caldwell & Hunter Yeargan.  Christian Smart finished 2nd, Alex Garrett finished 3rd, while Austin Hymer finished 4th.  This will mark Hunters 4th trip to the state tournament, Kyle and Niko's 3rd trip, Christians 2nd, with Alex and Austin earning their 1st trip.  The tigers will head to Columbia with high hopes and a determination to bring home some state medals.

And then add the following:  the state wrestling tournament is underway and as of the writing of this article all 6 Tigers are still alive in the tournament and we stand in 6th place out of 53 schools and only 1 point from the top four!

Willard High School has been in the midst of Courtwarming Week.  Our Student Government Association (SGA) has conducted a highly successful Spirit Week.  Students are eagerly anticipating the Boys Basketball game this evening where the Courtwarming candidates and their escorts will be presented and the 2016 WHS Courtwarming King will be crowned. There will also be a semi-formal dance immediately following the basketball game.

Our Willard High School Project Graduation is an incredible group of Senior parents who work tirelessly to raise funds for after graduation festivities each year.  The after graduation party allows our students to celebrate with their friends in a safe, supervised, drug and alcohol-free environment where they have plenty of food and fun until the early hours of the morning. Project Grad will be hosting a Silent Auction Bake Sale and a Cake Walk in the Commons Area this evening during the basketball games.  Please consider supporting this very worthy cause.

There is nothing quite as wonderful as receiving an unsolicited complimentary email.  This week a team of teachers at WMS were greeted with a special message in their inbox.  A parent, of one of the students on their team, carved out time in their day to write a thoughtful email.   This gesture is not small in the eyes of those receiving and means more than one could know.  This reminds me to take time every day to do something that makes another person know they matter and are appreciated.

The WMS Archery Team finished 2nd in the Crane tournament this past weekend.  Carson Gehring scored 284 points and placed 1st in the middle school boys division.   Kegan Patterson scored 282 and placed 3rd in the middle school boys division.  This Saturday they will be competing at the Willard Middle School tournament. Stop by and check it out!!

We hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend.  While the students were out on Friday afternoon, teachers were busy working on the math curriculum adoption committee, participating in intruder drills, planning for our Family Reading Night and working on Leader in Me planning activities.

Looking ahead to the coming weeks, we are excited about our Grandparents Day activities coming up on March 1st.  We are also excited to celebrate our 9th Annual All-School Book Club with our Family Reading Night on March 3rd.  Please mark your calendar to join us for these events.

We also hope you will join us Wednesday, Feb. 24 to support our friend Joey B. fighting cancer at St. Jude's.  We are asking students to wear their favorite superhero gear on Wednesday to show our support for Joey as he "HERO UPS" starting chemotherapy.  Students and families are also invited to make a donation to help support Joey's family for traveling and other expenses while he is in Memphis.  Several of his classmates have also started the "Joey Foundation" for students to donate Legos for Joey to play with while he is going through treatments.  Money and Lego donations can be turned in to WC..  Our school family will be working on a larger fundraiser to support Joey and his family in the coming months when he is able to be home and share some time with us.

I had the privilege of attending The Leader in Me Symposium in Kansas City this week with a large group of Willard staff members from WS, WE, WN and WMS.  The Leader in Me is Franklin Covey's whole school transformation process.  It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the philosophy that every child can be a leader.  It was very inspiring to hear the motivational speakers and visit area schools to see this process in action.  Needless to say, we all left inspired and ready to begin the journey of creating a culture of leaders in our buildings.

Don't miss out on the Willard South McTeacher Night on Tuesday, February 23rd!  The WS staff will be working at the McDonald's on West Chestnut Expressway from 4:00-8:00.  We hope to see you and your family!

Special Education

It was so nice to have a little break this week from routine!  It seems like the day off and the unseasonal warm temperatures have made us all a little more joyful! Joyful is an adjective that describes and can be defined as: feeling, expressing, or causing great pleasure and happiness. I would say that we need to do and be all three!

One of the many reasons that I enjoy working in education is that we get to help kids and adults learn new things,
tackle new challenges and find success.  Learning is why we exist. What we learn is the question. We typically think about reading skills and math skills, but I would add that while these are important, teaching kids to be good citizens is equally important.

I am proud to be in a district that puts personal development at the center of their efforts. These lessons are often referred to as the "hidden curriculum" and includes things like how to be a good friend, how to respect authority, how to help others, how to work together, how to demonstrate leadership, how to problem solve, how to be a lifelong learner and the list could go on and on. When these lessons are learned, it can bring great satisfaction to the individual and to their friends, family and community. It can quite literally transform a life. It can be what makes a classroom feel like a family, a school feel like a community and a community feel like a mission. This week, I want to say thank you to the teachers and parents who are modeling and helping to develop quality human beings and doing it joyfully!

I invite you to see this principle in action at the Annual Partners In Strength Night to be held on Monday, April 4th from 5:30-7:30 PM.  This year our theme is Superheroes and I guarantee you will witness some of the most joyful kids and staff on the planet!  Join us.
