District Office
One of my goals for the 2015-2016 school year is to engage several different audiences in discussion about Willard Schools.  I have had one meeting with businesses located in the South side of our district, two Town Hall style meetings and one small group discussion with city officials.  The following Town Hall meetings are scheduled later in the year and anyone is welcome to attend.
Central Elem         October 12             6:00

Middle School       October 13             6:30

Orchard Hills        October 20            6:00

South Elem           December 3           6:00

It is very important to community members that our district remains "Unique to Willard".  Willard community values run deep in our culture.  What is important to parents in Willard is very different then other communities.  I have always believed that the school needs to be a reflection of the community.  The Town Hall meetings provide a venue for district administrators to share about district improvement goals, but the most important aspect is the time allowed for patron questions and comments.  Our community takes great pride in Willard Schools and the district is working hard to listen to patrons and continue to develop strategies which help students succeed.  Ultimately, everything we do is based on how to help students succeed not only in the 13 years they are in public schools, but in life.  We need parent and community input to accomplish this goal!  Come and join us at one of the meetings.

Have a great weekend!
See you at Homecoming!

Homecoming week has been great. Teachers and students have participated in spirit activities throughout the week. The parade and bonfire on Wednesday evening was a lot of fun. A big thank you to our local police and fire departments for their assistance with those activities. We have a pep assembly this Friday afternoon, crown a queen prior to the football game, and then follow up after the game with a homecoming dance and other activities.

Our FFA students have created an opportunity for families and community...

Next Friday marks the end of 1st quarter. Students will be on early release schedule that day. Teachers will finalize grades and post to SIS (student information system) in the afternoon. If parents need access and login information to their students SIS, please contact the registrar.

It is GREAT to be a Tiger!

This week students learned about Habit 6: Synergize. Many times we think of synergize as just working together as team, but it also means to value each other and the strengths that each person brings to the team.  Our 1st grade teachers and students helped us learn about Synergizing this week because Together is Better!

Thank you to our students and families for supporting our school with our PTO fundraiser this week.  Your generosity in supporting our school is greatly appreciated!  Looking ahead to next week, we will have school pictures on Tuesday.  We will also be finishing up the 1st quarter and dismissing school at 12:30 to work on student report cards.

Welcome Fall and enjoy the homecoming festivities!  Go Tigers!

This week I would like to highlight some amazing academic successes! These were emails sent to me last week.  I am proud of all of our students with different abilities!

#1: Our English / Reading teachers are rocking it!

Student's first goal was to increase reading comprehension skills by reading at the independent 7th grade level from a baseline of independent 6th grade level as measured by the Burns and Roe Informal Reading Inventory (IRI). The student met and surpassed this goal.  The current independent reading level is 8th grade. The instructional reading level is 9th grade, and the frustration reading level is at 10th grade.  For the next IEP cycle, the student's goal will be to increase the reading levels to 9th independent, 10th instructional, and 11th frustration.

When the student started, they were at the 5th grade level according to the SRI (which reads about two to three grade levels higher than the IRI).  The student is almost at grade level and can be there before they graduate.

and another....

#2: They just keep on going up!

In the area of Reading: On 5/6/2015, the student was given the Burns and Roe Informal Reading Inventory.  The scores were as follows: 7th grade-90% independent, 8th grade-70% instructional, and 9th grade-40% frustration level.  Due to mastering the reading goal from last year, the goal will be to increase from a baseline of 8th grade independent comprehension reading level to a mastery level of 9th grade independent comprehension reading level as measured by the Burns and Roe Informal Reading Inventory.

Not only do we have caring and compassionate teachers, but they are outstanding instructors that help demonstrate that ALL kids can learn!
