Dr. Medlin is a Grandpa!

My life has changed a great deal in the past week! It is not because I hurt my foot playing volleyball with Coach Rowetons PE class or even because it is snowing outside on May 3rd. It is because I was extended an official invitation to the Grandpa Club!!!!! My son Jarred, (Willard class of 2005) and his wife Jessica, became proud parents of a beautiful baby girl named Emery Jane Medlin. God has blessed her with perfection and I have met her digitally on Skype. I look forward to meeting her in person in June. My bucket list just became much bigger!!

Willard Public Schools continue to support employees and listen to their thoughts and needs. Health Insurance is always listed as the #1 Priority for employees. Costs continue to rise for quality health care. Federal and State governments continue to wrestle with the best strategy to offer coverage to individuals. Throughout the past 10 years Willard Schools have found ways to extend 100% Board Paid Health Care coverage to employees. The BOE approved to accept the additional costs to continue this effort for 2013-2014.

There are no crystal balls that can help us to understand if this can continue indefinitely. Next year the cost of health care will be at an annual cost of $4,881.84 per eligible employee per year. This is 14% of the base teacher salary. The total district cost is $2,649,778. In the next fiscal year we should have a greater understanding how Missouri and the US Government will extend coverage to citizens. This will be critical to our continued discussion. I am thankful and appreciative of the school board for their continued commitment of this important benefit. (This is important to Grandpa's and Granddaughters!)

Have a great weekend!

Kent

Athletics & Activities

Spring sports is preparing for their district tournaments and we have a lot of celebrating to do so let's get to it!

The baseball Tigers are COC champs! After defeating the #1 ranked team in the state, Carthage, 6-1, the Tigers ran their record to 16-6 on the season and 6-1 in the COC. Congratulations to Coach McGee, his staff, and the players on a great regular season! We will be hosting the district tournament starting on May 11th. Our Tigers received the #2 seed (behind Carthage) and will open play vs the winner of the Republic/Webb City game on Monday, May 13th at 7:00pm. The championship game will be on Tuesday, May 14th at 6:00pm. Next week, the Tigers will travel to Bolivar on Monday and to Nixa on Thursday for non-conference games.

Congratulations to Marshall Faulkner, Robert Mitchals, and Eric Rodocker on qualifying for the Sectional golf tournament next Monday at Eagle Knoll Country Club in Jefferson City. All three did a great job at the district tournament on Monday at Greene Hills. Good luck guys!

The soccer Lady Tigers defeated Neosho this week but then fell to state ranked Nixa on Wednesday in a hard fought match. The girls are now 16-2 on the season! They have received the #1 seed in their district tournament being held at Republic. They will open play on Wednesday, May 15th. More details will be in next week's Pride. The girls will host Ozark next Tuesday for their only game of the week.

Willard High School senior Ali Frazier did not waste any time in her return to the shot put ring. After not competing in the event for several weeks, Frazier made her return count with a conference record throw of 38' 6 1/4". Her throw bettered the second place throw by nearly three feet and was less than a foot from her school record throw of earlier in the year. Frazier was one of two champions on the day, the other being freshman distance runner Chloe Andrews. Andrews captured the 1600m championship with a run of 5:32.18. The two paced the girls' team to a sixth place finish in the eight team conference. Also adding to the medal count for the girls was junior Danielle Sanger with a second place finish in the 100m (13.50). Andrews earned a silver medal in the 800m with a run of 2:30.68. Senior Bailey Hession finished third behind Andrews with a 2:32.19 earning the final medal for the Lady Tigers.

The Willard Tigers boys' track team was led by junior Z. Barr and senior Brady Fitch. Barr finished second in the 200m dash (23.14) and third in the 100m (11.94). Fitch captured second in the discus with a throw of 142' 11". Daniel Horne also brought home a medal with his third place finish in the high jump (6' 00). The 4 x 200m relay, consisting of Barr, Horne, senior Kolbe Kinghorn and senior Ramone Crews, earned the final medal for the boys' team with a third place finish in 1:33.65.

On Friday, Logan McReynolds, Patrick Pickens, Mitchell Kirkpatrick, Daniel Kis, and Noah Gilmore all recieved I ratings for their woodworking projects. Noah recieved 2nd place in the Advanced Wall Hanging division and Daniel and Mitchell both recieved the Grand Prize award for Advanced Wall Hanging and Novice Wall Hanging respectively. Noah, Daniel, and Mitchell have qualified for the State competition next week.

EOC assessments are completed. What a great job the WHS staff and students have done. From technology staff, substitute teachers, classroom teachers, special services staff, counselors, and instructional support specialists, WHS exhibited a team effort to assist our students in completing approximately 2000 individual assessments in just 2 weeks! The efforts of many including students has been awesome.
DECA, Choir, Art, and Industrial Technology students showed work and competed at festivals in late-April. Choir students received more than 30 1-ratings. Art brought back 17 awards from 25 pieces of art entered! Industrial Tech garnered several awards and qualified 3 students for state. Finally, DECA just returned from Anaheim, California, where they competed at the 67th Annual International Career Development Conference. Awesome results from lots of students and programs!
Prom is May 4th at the Oasis. Senior finals are May 13-14. Graduation will be May 17th. Last day for all other students is May 24th.
It is GREAT to be a Tiger!

Although surprises are fun, let's hope the sun returns and there are no more cold weather surprises!

May is off to a busy start at the middle school. Softball and track have finished their season, congratulations to all the students who participated in many successful games and meets. A special congratulations goes out to Josh McGuire on setting a new COC record in Discus with a throw of 116'9".

There are several opportunities for students to give back this month. We are encouraging students to participate in the Caring for Kids food drive May 6th - 10th, all the donations from the food drive will be going to the Willard Food Pantry.

7th grade students will be participating in the Children's Miracle Network Walk-a-Thon on May 16th. This is a great way to support a wonderful charity!

Next week is Teacher Appreciation week and we will be celebrating our WMS teachers for investing their lives into the students of Willard. We will also be showing our appreciation to all those who work in food services and our nurse. Please help us in thanking them for all they do.

Thanks for checking in with the Middle School!

Welcome to the last month of School!!! This year has flown by! North 3rd and 4th grade students completed the MAP test this week. They worked hard to show off all they know and have learned. We have a lot of end of the year activities planned for Willard North. This is also a very special time to recognize all of our teachers. Willard Teachers love what they do, and it is evident everyday when they come to school to teach your child. Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week at Willard North and across the district. Next week offers a great opportunity for you to tell your child's teacher how much you appreciate them. They would greatly appreciate it!

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week! Let's celebrate teachers!

As a mom:
I have forgotten to send snacks and the teacher had extra snacks.
I forgot picture day and the teacher made sure my child looked presentable.
I listened as my child told me some exaggerated stories about school and smiled. I do not believe everything my child says.

I know that my child has gone to school and shared some exaggerated family details. The teacher listened but doesn't believe everything my child says either. I had to discipline my child for something that happened at school. I did not ask what the other children did. I did not ask my child if it was true. I disciplined her because she is 7 and the adult in charge told me she did something unacceptable.

I know that my child's teacher is not perfect and will make mistakes. I do not point that out every time there is an incident.  I am thrilled that there is caring, patient, educated teacher to help my child grow and learn.

As the Principal:
I support my teachers. Period.  I also know that teachers are human and make mistakes. I make mistakes too.

I have answered my phone during all hours of the night for teachers who are sick but don't want to miss school. But they want the sub to make sure "Little Susie" goes to the nurse when needed. I have used my own money(lots of it) to provide for various school related activities and didn't think twice about it.

I have seen my teachers in public places in costumes. Would you wear a Super Hero costumes to get coffee in the morning?

I also don't thank my teachers enough and I am glad when Teacher Appreciation Week comes around so I can celebrate how much they do for all our children.

Your child's teacher has shown grace towards you and your child and always will because that is A TEACHER.

How will you thank a teacher next week?

The third grade and first grade classes went to WHS today to see the Theater Departments presentation of "African Stories". Both groups really enjoyed the show!
