District Office
Most of my Pride articles focus on what we are doing to improve, or what we plan to do. We consistently look to the future. New program, new learning, new plan, new - new - new. Sometimes we need to pause and appreciate the past. Tonight we get that opportunity. The athletic schedule has thrown us a curve ball because two major athletic contests converge on the same night.

We are normally able to reconfigure schedules or utilize different locations in buildings to accommodate the conflict. However, tonight that was not the case. WHS is recognized as one of the most beautiful, versatile, comfortable, facilities in the the entire state. Willard is often recommended and approved for State level competition. That is the case tonight and tomorrow for District Wrestling.

Our Tigers are highly competitive and will represent us in fine fashion enjoying home field advantage for this first level of State competition. The conflict impacted Boys Basketball and therefore presented the scheduling problem. As usual Willard staff created lemonade out of a difficult situation. Our community loves our new facility and our gym is certainly 1st class, but many of us remember High School basketball being played in the current Middle School.

Overflowing crowds, lines forming at 2:00p.m., administration sweating because we have to close doors turning spectators away because of the fire code, crowded restrooms, and an atmosphere that shook the rafters! Sometimes we need to remember the traditions, efforts, and history that has created the culture of Willard Schools. Willard has a tremendously rich history.

Tonight will be fun! It will give us the opportunity to enjoy and share old stories and celebrate the past. Monday we can come back to school appreciating our past and aspire to create an even better future.

Have a great weekend!

Athletics & Activities

Willard is going to be hopping tonight as we will be hosting two big events that will both bring in a lot of people to our community. First is the Class 3, District 3 wrestling tournament being held at the high school. The tournament involves 15 schools with the top 4 individuals in each weight class moving on to the state tournament next week in Columbia. Wrestling will start at 5:30 tonight and will pick back up at 9:30 tomorrow morning. The championship rounds will start at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon. Willard will have 10 wrestlers trying to advance! This leads me to the boys basketball game vs. Carthage tonight. Due to the wrestling tournament, the boys will be going back a few years and will play at the middle school. It should be a great atmosphere and I hope you get to come out and experience it.

The Tigers had a great win on Tuesday as they defeated Webb City. After tonight's game vs. Carthage they will host Republic on Tuesday (this will be Senior Night!) and will travel to Neosho on Friday. The boys find out on Wednesday what seed they will receive in the district tournament.

The Lady Tigers lost a heartbreaker last night to Carthage but will look to rebound next week as they will host Republic on Monday (Senior Night!) and will travel to Neosho on Thursday. A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Amber Percival!!!!! Amber scored her 1000th point last night! We will be honoring her at the game on Monday.

Last weekend at The Reeds Spring tournament the Speech and Debate team had a lot of success. Eighteen went to semi-finals and eight to finals, with the team placing 4th overall! In semi-finals- Terra Hogue US Extemp., Kayleigh Amstutz HI, Allie London and Mikala Dotson in DUO, Katelynn Wilson and Hayden Onstott in Prose, Chenoa Schwenn and Aly Manes in Poetry , Jake Brumfield in Story Telling, and Jordan Turner and Kienen Wilson in Radio. In finals were Conor Wadle in US Extemp., Cameron McMurtrey 2ne in HI, Jeremiah Puckett and Wyat Gregory 3rd and Aly Manes and Jake Brumfield 2nd in DUO, Mikala Dotson 4th and Kathryn Bushnell 3rd in Poetry, Kayleigh Amstutz 3rd in Story Telling and Conor Wadle 5th in Radio. Great Job to the whole team!

High School

There is a plane in the commons! While it is a mock plane, students have been studying and learning about the Women of Lockerbie in several classes. The interdisciplinary unit will conclude on Monday with two drama performances.

ROTC will be holding their annual Offsite Inspection on Tuesday in the main gym. Retired Captain Walden, US Navy, will be conducting the uniform inspection of all NJROTC students. This program continues to grow and develop students. Captain Burnett and Master Sergeant McClelland are great assets to our district.

Please remember no school for students on Friday, Feb 15, or Monday, Feb 18. Teachers will be participating in professional development activities on Friday. During this time, some of our teachers will begin a new professional development unit on teaching virtual classes. Mrs. Garton will provide teachers with instructional strategies and technical skill to successfully conduct online courses. Departments will continue to align curriculum to meet the learning needs of our students as well.

Certainly want to say "Congratulations" to Amber Percival on reaching 1,000 points in her high school basketball career. Good luck to our district wrestlers, ACT test-takers, and our speech-debate team this weekend!

It is a GREAT time to be a Tiger!

he K-2nd grade teachers and staff members at Willard North enjoyed an evening this week working at Pizzano's. It was a huge success! The students, parents, and teachers enjoyed interacting outside the classroom atmosphere. The money earned from this event will be used to purchase classroom supplies. This week we are holding a "Penny War" for the WCCF Change a Life Money Drive. The students are doing a great job bringing in pennies to support a good cause. Thank you for all your support!

Students are also working hard learning to use and create many new things with technology here at North. They are recording data and making graphs in a Google spreadsheet, creating Kidspration projects on the water cycle, researching and blogging facts about Jefferson City, and much more. Way to learn Einsteins!

Upcoming Events:

Last Friday I attended an appreciation breakfast that was hosted by our school social workers Chrysta Forrest and Debbie Burks at the Willard Community Center. These two individuals started this annual event several years ago to highlight the accomplishments of all of the countless volunteers and organizations in our district. These supporters help with our local Care to Learn chapter, Willard Community Food Pantry and Clothing Bank. I would also like to thank all of the amazing volunteers we have throughout our district that help ensure our students and families needs are met each day. Your countless hours and donations touch the hearts of many families. Your priceless contributions are truly appreciated.

Our Student Council members are off to a great start with their SMENCIL sales. This week they have sold around 500 pencils! They will continue selling these items through next week. Students are working towards purchasing playground supplies for each classroom.

Upcoming Events:

  • February 11th-14th--Student Council SMENCIL Sales ($1 per pencil)
  • February 14th--Classroom Valentine's Day Parties at 2:30

Willard students across the district have been raising money to support the Willard Children's Charitable Foundation. This great organization and group of community members serve the students of Willard by providing graduation scholarships and by providing medical assistance for the physical and mental needs of our students. Each building worked towards the goal of raising $1 per student. I am so proud of our WC students and staff for their generosity. Students and staff members "Tipped Their Hats" to WCCF for all of their hard work on Wednesday. Students donated a quarter or more and staff members paid to wear jeans to school this week. Together we raised $571.62 and contributions continue to come in! Thank you for blessing such a wonderful cause for Willard kids!

Willard Central students, their families, and our staff shared dinner together on Monday night with our McTeacher Night. Teachers looked a little tired after their "double shift", but it was great to spend time with our students and their families outside of the school day. Thank you to everyone who came out to support WC at McTeacher Night and thank you to the West Chestnut McDonalds' location for hosting us. Together we earned $773.30 for our school!

As we look ahead to next week, plan to join us for our PTO Meeting at 6:00 on Monday evening. Students Council Members will be selling Valentine Grams for 50 cents next week in the entryway before school. Our PTO will be hosting our Valentine's Day Parties at 2:45 on Thursday. Students will be out of school on Friday for teacher professional development/curriculum meetings and everyone will be out of school on Monday, February 18th for Presidents' Day.

POLAR PLUNGE!

On February 23, 2013 two of our teachers, Jillian Pointer (Transition House-WHS) and Christine Chamberlain (Speech/Language Pathologist) will be participating in the Polar Plunge at the Lake of the Ozarks. They are doing this to promote our "plunge" into bringing Special Olympics Missouri opportunities to our students here at Willard R-II, in conjunction with A Sporting Chance.

If you would like to donate to Special Olympics Missouri and their craziness, please contact Mrs. Chamberlain at [email protected]) or Miss Pointer at [email protected] for more information. Proceeds benefit Special Olympics Missouri's year round program of sports training and competition for children and adults with disabilities.

Thank you in advance for your support!
