METRO's Safe Track Surge Hits Silver Spring Starting in August,
MCDOT to Provide Supplemental Bus, Other Service

As part of a year-long "SafeTrack" effort to improve the safety and reliability of the Metrorail system, WMATA has implemented a plan to repair the entire system one segment at a time. Three planned segment repairs and around-the-clock single tracking projects, referred to as "Safety Surges," will affect WMATA's Red Line service in Montgomery County. From August 1 through August 7, Red Line trains will continuously single-track between Takoma and Silver Spring stations. From August 9 through August 18, continuous single tracking will move to the section between Twinbrook and Shady Grove stations. A later surge on the Red Line will result in a total shutdown of Metrorail between NoMa-Galludet and Fort Totten stations from October 10 through November 1.
WMATA has committed to providing enhanced bus service in these areas during the surges. In addition, Montgomery County Department of Transportation will expand its bus operations to provide additional service, a well as free shuttles in the affected areas. In addition, MCDOT is working with BikeShare to expand its services. For more details, see MCDOT's news release.
