GSSCC Asks General Assembly for Pre-emption on Sick Leave

GSSCC and other Montgomery County business groups are calling on our State Senators to amend the Sick and Safe Leave Bill (HB 580) to preempt all local laws imposing sick leave mandates on employers, so there is one law governing employers' sick leave plans throughout Maryland. HB580 has passed the House and is going to the Senate this morning, the last day of this General Assembly session. As passed by the House, HB 580 fails to preempt the Montgomery County sick leave mandate on employers, which will become effective October 1, 2016. The Montgomery County Council passed its own local sick leave bill last year and there are numerous differences between the County law and the bill being considered by the General Assembly. If the State bill passes without the preemption amendment, it will create confusion and an administrative nightmare for businesses that have employees in multiple Maryland jurisdictions. Members interested in weighing on on this issue should email Senator Jamie Raskin today. The session ends at midnight tonight.

County Bill Would Set Minimum Wage at $15 per Hour

Councilmember Marc Elrich will introduce legislation on Tuesday that would raise the Montgomery County minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2020. Currently the County minimum wage exceeds the Maryland State wage by $1.25 per hour. Councilmembers George Leventhal, Hans Riemer, and Nancy Navarro have signed on in support of Elrich's bill. A public hearing on the bill is scheduled for June 21. To read a copy of the bill click hereGSSCC needs to know how this law will affect our member businesses. If you support this measure, please contact Jane Redicker and explain why. Likewise, if you oppose it, please contact Jane and explain how it will affect your business.
