Many Bills Remaining
for the California Legislature to Act On
By Owen Guenthard, Legislative Affairs Director
As the California legislative session winds down in the few weeks remaining before the midsummer vacation recess and the month following the recess, there are still hundreds of bills remaining to be processed in the California legislature.
The Assembly has already voted for a constitutional amendment that would lower the vote requirement for local government bond issues from the present two-thirds to only 55%. This is not a massive change since school bond measures presently only require a 55% vote, but it does showcase the Assembly's 55-seat Democratic supermajority that allows them to pass constitutional amendments that require a two-thirds vote with ease.
The California State Senate also has a Democratic supermajority, but its leadership has postponed any action on bond measures until at least next year. Issues remaining on the Senate's summer agenda include the Governor's proposal to eliminate enterprise zones that would negatively impact local governments with such zones. There is also a raft of restrictive gun control laws that remain to be acted on.
On their agenda is an onerous measure that would increase the state's minimum wage from $8 to $9.25 per hour in stages and then make increases automatic and keyed to inflation thereafter. This measure could negatively impact summer employment opportunities for entry level jobs. Also on the agenda is a union backed bill that would require businesses whose employees receive Medi-Cal health care benefits to pay additional fees to offset taxpayers' costs.
With the state budget behind them, the real impact of the 2013 California State Legislature's actions on the state's economic future remains in doubt.

What are the Duties of a Chamber of Commerce
Board Member?
 | Lee Lieberg Landz Realtors |
Being on the board of directors at the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce is a great way to know what is going on in the city. The reports keep me updated on everything
from the schools to future developments.
It also provides an excellent channel of communication between the business community and City Hall. Businesses need to help each other. By promoting Alhambra we all gain, and serving as a board member makes me a participant.
The newspaper the Chamber publishes is the envy of the San Gabriel Valley. Both my wife and I have had terrific results in
our advertising

Alhambra Golf Course is a unique course of uncommon design. With its regulation par of 70 and shorter length of 5,212 yards, it is a pleasure for all to play. Numerous bunkers, lakes, and tree-lined fairways offer a formidable challenge for the most advanced player and accommodate the developing player without the intimidating length of championship gold courses. The course is recognized by Audubon International
for the care and concern of the environment, and the "fine feathered" variety are not the only "birdies" one may experience.

Get Big, Think Small
By Robert Fukui, High Point Marketing
 | |
Robert Fukui
High Point Marketing, Inc.
|
I've spent the first 20 years of my career working for large corporations such as Coca-Cola, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, and Bristol Myers Squibb in a sales and marketing capacity. But over the last two years, I've been working with local small businesses and non-profits to develop marketing strategies to increase their bottom line.
Since working with small business, the thing I've noticed that separates the big companies from the small ones (besides the size or their bank account) is the way they think. If there is one thing a small business can emulate in a big way is how they go about growing their business.
The big companies tend to think small while the small companies sometimes think too big. For example, a large company such as Coca-Cola concentrates on selling a lot of Coke even though they sell a variety of other flavors of soda, juice, water, and sport drinks. By focusing on their key product over the years, it has resulted in making Coca-Cola a large multi-national brand.
Yes, they have launched into other beverage segments such as fruit drinks, water, and sport drinks, but their domination in the soda sector has given them the opportunity to successfully move into other sectors because they have capitalized on the large distribution network that was created by the success of their flagship brand.
Small businesses start off with focusing on their key products and services but often get side tracked because of the "need" to create additional streams of revenue. While diversification is good, if done too early, it can actually sabotage the core business and dilute the brand.
So, the key to growth is to think small by focusing on the core business and work to dominate. Once in a dominant position, the business can then branch out to other product lines and see quicker adoption because of the positive brand image they've created with the core business.
Get big by thinking small!
High Point Marketing creates comprehensive marketing plans and strategies for small business and non-profits. The plans for clients are created through research of the industry, market, competition, and target market. After the background research, High Point develops the marketing mix of Product, Price, Promotion, Placement, and Position. This will be the backbone of the marketing strategy in which High Point develops the most cost-effective method to communicate the value of products and services to the clients' customers.
