Mark Paulson
Immediate Past President

A Board Member must be a Chamber member in good standing, either as an individual or the representative of a business. The term of office is three years, and can be extended up to five terms.

Additionally, there is an Executive Board made up of the President, Secretary Treasurer, Immediate Past President and three Board Members at large.

Serving on the Chamber Board gives one a greater insight into the operations of the Chamber and a voice in the direction the Chamber of Commerce takes. After all, the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce belongs to all of the Membership and we should be activity involved.

La Bron Kelly Tool

Kelly Tool & Manufacturing owner La Bron Burdette and some of the

many products manufactured by Kelly Tool

Kelly Tool & Manufacturing produces quality through

good times and bad

Throughout the last decade, not many industries have been through as hard times as the manufacturing sector. So it may surprise many that inside a 10,000 square foot warehouse at 433 S. Palm Ave., one Alhambra company has been stamping away for more than 50 years manufacturing parts that keep commercial businesses going. "We manufacture brackets, roller assemblies, springs, backup plates, hinges-all things that are indigenous to commercial real estate," said owner LaBron Burdette. "We're a stamping house. We form metal from punch presses and make products that are either proprietary to me or to our customers."

Mr. Burdette acquired the company in 1985. Today, he oversees a company that produces around 100 different items, including a line of precision tools. Mr. Burdette acknowledged that the economy has taken its toll on the industry and his own business. But he said his company has managed to survive the times because of its strong financial position, which was created over years of providing quality products. "We don't make a lot of mistakes. We are pretty good at what we do," he said. "Everything I produce, I guarantee.

"The economy is very definitely affecting us in major ways. We have lost some customers to overseas interests. A lot of what I used to do now is being produced in China. But we're seeing some of that work come back because of quality control which seems to be non-existent in some cases over there."

"Some of the clients who went to China for various metal goods found out the quality of the parts wasn't as good as ours," said Rebecca Johnson, office manager. "They are starting to come back, and we are seeing volume purchase from these companies."

Inside Kelly Tool & Manufacturing, one can spot an impressive array of equipment, including 19 presses that range in size from 5 to 80 tons, seven milling machines, and nine drill presses. Just eight people work at the large facility, so workers can be seen moving from machine to machine performing different jobs. While business has slowed overall, Mr. Burdette is optimistic about the future of manufacturing in this country.

"Only time will tell whether I'm part of a dying breed," he said. "I don't think so. I think there will always be a need for companies such as mine. There are things that need to be manufactured here in smaller quantities that make it economically unfeasible to handle manufacturing overseas. Things are going to get better. It's just a matter of when."
