Congressman Foster Civil Rights Panel Discussion

Congressman Bill Foster will host a panel discussion commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act next Monday, July 14, at 11 a.m. in the second floor meeting room of the library. The panel discussion, titled "Civil Rights: The Next 50 Years," will recognize how far our country has come since the passing of the Civil Rights Act as well as what still needs to be accomplished. The discussion, free and open to the public, will address income inequality, women's issues, equal pay, education, and the role churches played during the civil rights movement.
Panelists include Mario Lambert II, Dupage County Branch NAACP President; Rev. Kevin J. Bedford, Senior Pastor at Progressive Baptist Church; Lulu Blacksmith, Director of Federal and Cultural Relations at Waubonsee Community College; and Lorraine Guerrero of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will & Grundy Counties.

GenLit: A New Generation of Book Club

Our GenLit book group for 20-30somethings meets for drinks, dinner, and discussion at various local restaurants on the fourth Wednesday of the month January through October. The group's July discussion will focus on The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. The group will meet on Wednesday, July 23, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Home Run Inn Pizza, 7521 Lemont Rd. in Darien. Great Grilled Cheese Battle

IPPL and Whole Foods are partnering to co-host the first-ever Great Grilled Cheese Battle this Saturday, July 12, at 1 p.m. at Whole Foods Market, 201 63rd St. in Willowbrook. Teen participants must craft the most delectable sandwich possible by choosing from a variety of fresh and natural ingredients provided by Whole Foods. Judges will then choose a winner based on taste, presentation, creativity, and difficulty. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can compete solo or as a team of two. Register here by Wednesday, July 9.

July Junction Programs

This year, we are going beyond books and reading and encouraging people to expand their horizons by attending programs. Join us at the Junction - IPPL Junction! - to learn something new, create from scratch, and share your knowledge with your neighbors. IPPL card-holders who participate in designated Junction programs will earn entries into monthly and grand prize drawings, donated by the Friends of IPPL.

Make Some Noise Summer Reading Challenge

We have created a unique summer reading challenge for kids and teens which runs through Aug. 2. Not only will participants earn rewards for reading books, but they will also be rewarded for making projects and attending special events and programs at the library!
