Kids Read Events

Families are invited to build a "car" and watch a "drive-in" movie at our Kids Read events this Saturday, March 22.

During the Build-A-Car event, families will build a car out of a cardboard box for their child and leave it in a "parking space" at the library to reserve a spot for the Drive-In Movie later that evening. The Build-A-Car event will start at 10:30 a.m. and families are encouraged to bring their own box. (Participants not attending the movie can take their cars home.)

At 6 p.m., families and children of all ages, with or without a car, are invited to the Drive-In Movie presentation of The Muppet Movie (G). Hot dogs, popcorn and beverages will be served.

Participants can register online for the Build-A-Car and the Drive-In Movie events, and both are free. For more information on the Kids Read program or The Big Read, visit www.thebigread.org

The 10th Annual Big Read Continues

This year's Big Read selection, The Longest Road: Overland in Search of America, from Key West to the Arctic Ocean by Chicago native Philip Caputo, is his record of an epic 16,000-mile journey to discover "what unites and divides a country as endlessly diverse as it is large."

Join us on Wednesday, March 26 at 1 p.m. for The Southernmost Point: Escaping to Key West as frequent visitor Carol Kania Morency points out essential sights of the island and the Overseas Highway. For a complete list of Big Read programs, click on the Program Guide.

Save the Date for Our 25th Birthday Party!

Our 25th anniversary celebration continues, and we are inviting the entire community to our grand finale Birthday Party in April. Relive the 1980's with music, games, crafts, history, and trivia. The all-ages event will take place Saturday, April 26, from 1 to 4 p.m., and refreshments will be served. Don't forget to dress to impress - 80's style!

We are celebrating our 25th Birthday!  Here is what happened in Science and Technology the year we were born:

Following a 32-month hiatus after the Challenger disaster, NASA launched a new space shuttle, Discovery, on September 29, 1988.

Doppler Radar, which allows meteorologists to look inside of storms to see cloud rotation, was invented in 1988 by Christian Doppler

In 1988, scientists from the US, UK, and Switzerland teamed up to use radiocarbon dating on the Shroud of Turin, a religious artifact once thought to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ. The tests confirmed that the shroud originated 1230-1390 CE, which corresponds to the shroud's first-known use in the medieval Catholic Church.
