SOS needs parent mentors!

SOS is beginning soon, and is in need of 6-7 parents to mentor 6th graders through their project. You do not have to be a 6th grade parent to be a mentor!  Parent mentors will need to be available during the CBC time slot November 7th,  14th, 28th, and December 5th. We can't do it without out you!  Please contact Sarah Wilcox at swilcox@ansercharterschool.org if you need more information or want to volunteer.

CBC NEEDS YOU!

Do you love to scrapbook and get excited about seeing student work come to life in a scrapbook page?  Then save the date for Wednesday, December 12th during CBC time for our first scrap booking day of the year!  If you have done CBC scrap booking before or never have, and are interested, please email hbanuelos@ansercharterschool.org  to sign up!

CBC Service Session begins on November 7th and lasts 4 weeks, ending on December 5th.  No CBC the week of Thanksgiving.  A special service introduction will occur on Wednesday the 31st of October in the gym from 2-3 pm.  This will give your child a brief introduction to the community partner/module they will be working with.  The module lists are posted on the CBC board in the main hallway.  This session is HIGHLY dependent on parents who are willing to drive and chaperone each week.  Be on the lookout for emails from module coordinators this week!

 The Anser Library:

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated books for our library. We have had such an amazing response. I would like to now move into the second phase...graphic novels!  The website for graphic novel donations is up and running. If you are interested in donating go to http://www.donorschoose.org/we-teach/1588861 you can donate as little or as much as you want toward the preselected graphic novels for our library. If you choose to donate make sure you enter INSPIRE in the coupon section during checkout. This is a promotion that donorschoose is doing for one week. By entering INSPIRE they will match each donation dollar for dollar. So if you donate $5, donorschoose will match it to make it a $10 donation. For now I am putting the library book donations on hold. I need to catch up on getting these books on our shelves. If you have any questions please contact Bekkie at bekkier@msn.com.

Congratulations to Dolly and Maggie:

Dolly and Maggie Chase received the grant they wrote to the SDE for 20 I-pads in the classroom!  This will allow Dolly to complete the project that is underway in a more efficient manner.  Now the trick is to get them up and running!!!

Anser wishes to recognize.....

The Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation named the 10 recipients of the 2012 Whiting Writers' Awards Tuesday, and for the second consecutive year, the list includes two Idahoans.

This year's winners are award-winning short story writer Alan Heathcock of Boise, and Obie Award-winning playwright Sam Hunter, who grew up in Moscow and now lives in New York City.

Heathcock grew up in the Chicago area and moved to Idaho 10 years ago at the suggestion of his friend, writer Tony Doerr. He started working on his collection of stories that would become "Volt: Stories" as he earned a second degree in writing at Boise State and then taught creative writing there.

Winter Sports:

Did you see the snow on Bogus Basin this week?  Well, we did!  Be thinking about whether or not you want your child (2-8 grade) to participate in some of the great winter sports up at Bogus Basin this year and be looking for registration forms to begin heading your way after thanksgiving break.  THINK SNOW!

Spanish Needs:

I am in need of classroom-appropriate magazines both in Spanish and not.  If you would be willing to donate magazines for students to use in Spanish class for projects we would greatly appreciate it. There is a box outside of the Spanish room labeled "magazine donations", that you can drop off your magazines in.

Thank-you in advance,

Dani

 Parking Changes are coming:

ACHD plans to take out the two parking spaces on street that are directly North of the crosswalk on the West side of 42nd st. The spaces are closer to the crosswalk than is legally allowed. However, in that same area, where it is currently a "No Parking" zone, they will be changing it to a Loading and Unloading zone, where you can park legally for up to 10 minutes. We know these changes to parking can be frustrating, unfortunately they are out of Anser's control. We do hope that drivers will have better visibility as they exit the pickup line due to this change. In the first few days after the changes are implemented we will have a parent volunteer passing out flyers about the change and about our parking and pick up procedures. We thank you in advance for parking legally and for following the procedures that have been put in place to keep our students safe and traffic flowing as smoothly as it can.

Need a Coach for Anser Ski Team:

We are looking for a coach for the Anser Ski team. The coach informs the students of race details and at times helps with timing and moving skiers through the process. All Anser junior high students can participate in ski team and are required to have their own rides up and down the hill. The ski coach gets a season pass from Bogus and a discount card for Bogus as well. Ski season may seem a long way off, but the coaches meeting is November 15th, so we need to find a volunteer before that date. If you would be willing to coach Ski team or have additional questions please contact Heather Dennis at

hdennis@ansercharterschool.org

Holiday Card Contest:

Each year, the State Department of Education sponsors a Holiday Card contest to draw attention to art programs in Idaho's elementary schools. One drawing is selected for the Department's holiday greeting card. The child who submits the selected artwork receives cards for his or her own use. The winning entry for each grade also receives a certificate.

This art contest is a very special tradition here at the State Department of Education, and we all look forward to continuing the tradition this year and seeing examples of elementary school children's art on display. The following lists some considerations:

1.      The contest is open to public school students in grades K-6.

2.      Drawings should reflect winter scenes in Idaho appropriate for seasonal correspondence, and should not include copyrighted images such as Garfield the Cat, Bugs Bunny, Digimon characters, etc.

3.      Drawings should be on 8.5" by 11" paper in a landscape format.

4.      Drawings must be properly labeled. Write the name of the student, the student's grade, district, school, and the teacher's name on the back of the artwork. Please make sure this information is legible. (If you submit multiple grade levels, please keep the entries for each grade level separate.)

5.      Students may use as many colors as they wish in their drawings and may use watercolors, colored paper, magic markers, crayons, or some combination.  Students are encouraged to completely fill the page but keep the design simple. Too many details tend to get lost in the design. Bold colors work best for the printing process. Please note: Fabric designs and pencil drawings are not suitable to our printing process and will not be selected.

6.      Students must be advised that entry into this contest constitutes (1) a waiver of all copyrights students have in their entries, and (2) permission to republish entries without compensation.

7.      Drawings will not be returned.

8.      The winning entries from each grade level will be published on the Idaho State Department of Education Web site at www.sde.idaho.gov.

9.      Submissions must be postmarked by Friday, November 9, 2012. Results will be announced in December. Drawings may be mailed to:

Math Night for Parents!

Parents are in for a treat the evening of November 15 beginning at 6:30.  Dr. Jonathan Brendefer, a Boise State University professor, who started the Developing Mathematical Thinking (DMT)  project will be our guest speaker.  The DMT Project was started in 2004. The project orginally partnered with three schools in the Boise, Caldwell, and Emmett communities of southwestern Idaho and is now an excepted way of teaching mathematics in the state of Idaho.  In fact, every teacher who becomes certified in Idaho must take the class for certification.  Dr. Brendefer worked with Anser teachers in 2003-2004 as well, when he had two daughters attending the school.   Dr. Brendefer has conducted research in the area of mathematics for many years and has seen proven results in the improvement in students' mathematical thinking and schools' test scores.  Parents will have an opportunity to listen to Dr. Brendefer, ask questions, then go into their child's classroom to learn about Anser's math program and to experience some of the ways in which we "do math" at Anser.  Plan early...this is something you do not want to miss!
