Fall Fund Drive:

Fall Fund Drive: Restore Anser

What do all schools in Idaho have in common?  Times have been tough financially. In fact state funding to schools has been cut by 19% over the past four years. But what is different about Anser and other charters from district schools? We have no mechanism to regain those funds through a levy vote. When Boise School District went to voters to ask them to restore education funding for Boise schools over 70% of households voted to raise their own taxes to support the  students in their community. What if 70% of Anser families would put a "levy" on themselves by donating to the Fall Fund Drive?  The Fall Fund drive is Anser's way to insure our programs are adequately funded and that our students get to have a great educational experience. We hope that you will join the many Anser families who already "voted for the Anser levy" by donating to the Fall Fund Drive today!

Thank you to the following families for their donation to the Fall Fund Drive:  Catherine and Vincent Serio, Stacy and Michael Shaw, Duncan and Kari Filson, Kris and Tim Martin, Julie and Kim Blaugher, Mark and Erin Zaleski, Rick and Staci Darmody, Ben and Jill Johnson, Sarah and Doug Englert, Tim and Heidi Carey, Jessica McGinnis and Mike Cutler and Laurie and Jim McNamara, Megan O'Neill/Gisler, Laura and Vic Kaydan, John and Maya Wolter

CBC Service and Compassion:

CBC Service and Compassion registration forms went home with students yesterday.  They are on the green sheet and are due back by 8:30 am on Friday morning returned to the classroom teacher.  Do not return forms to the front office or Heather's office.  They will be collected at 8:30 by the CBC committee.

The lottery is promptly at 8:30, if forms are returned after that time they will be considered late and added to the bottom of the lottery.  We will not be checking email after 8:00 am for forms.

 The Anser Library:

Thank-you to everyone who has donated books to the Anser Library we've had a great response so far! We are still in need of more books and are in the process of writing a grant to help with the graphic novels!

Did you know that a library is supposed to have 25 books available PER child and that is just to keep the library sustainable? While our library has some books, we don't have near that many. So in an effort to help increase the library we are asking for donations of gently used, good quality children's books. Maybe your children have moved on from picture books to chapter books or from chapter books into graphic novels. We would love those books your children are no longer interested in reading. There is a box on top of the book drop downstairs for donated books. Please place any books you are willing to part with in this box. These can only be children's books suitable for k-8th grades. Also, please also make sure they are in good shape with no torn pages or seams. If you have any questions contact Bekkie Ritchie @ bekkier@msn.com.

 Parking Changes are coming:

ACHD plans to take out the two parking spaces on street that are directly North of the crosswalk on the West side of 42nd st. The spaces are closer to the crosswalk than is legally allowed. However, in that same area, where it is currently a "No Parking" zone, they will be changing it to a Loading and Unloading zone, where you can park legally for up to 10 minutes. We know these changes to parking can be frustrating, unfortunately they are out of Anser's control. We do hope that drivers will have better visibility as they exit the pickup line due to this change. In the first few days after the changes are implemented we will have a parent volunteer passing out flyers about the change and about our parking and pick up procedures. We thank you in advance for parking legally and for following the procedures that have been put in place to keep our students safe and traffic flowing as smoothly as it can.

 Anser Auction Winner Parking Spot:
Every year at the Spring Auction a "coveted parking" spot is auctioned off and is a high dollar ticket item. There is a sign that designates this parking spot for the auction winner. Please try to practice the Anser character traits of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity and do not park in this spot.

Need a Coach for Anser Ski Team:

We are looking for a coach for the Anser Ski team. The coach informs the students of race details and at times helps with timing and moving skiers through the process. All Anser junior high students can participate in ski team and are required to have their own rides up and down the hill. The ski coach gets a season pass from Bogus and a discount card for Bogus as well. Ski season may seem a long way off, but the coaches meeting is November 15th, so we need to find a volunteer before that date. If you would be willing to coach Ski team or have additional questions please contact Heather Dennis at

hdennis@ansercharterschool.org

Holiday Card Contest:

Each year, the State Department of Education sponsors a Holiday Card contest to draw attention to art programs in Idaho's elementary schools. One drawing is selected for the Department's holiday greeting card. The child who submits the selected artwork receives cards for his or her own use. The winning entry for each grade also receives a certificate.

This art contest is a very special tradition here at the State Department of Education, and we all look forward to continuing the tradition this year and seeing examples of elementary school children's art on display. The following lists some considerations:

1.      The contest is open to public school students in grades K-6.

2.      Drawings should reflect winter scenes in Idaho appropriate for seasonal correspondence, and should not include copyrighted images such as Garfield the Cat, Bugs Bunny, Digimon characters, etc.

3.      Drawings should be on 8.5" by 11" paper in a landscape format.

4.      Drawings must be properly labeled. Write the name of the student, the student's grade, district, school, and the teacher's name on the back of the artwork. Please make sure this information is legible. (If you submit multiple grade levels, please keep the entries for each grade level separate.)

5.      Students may use as many colors as they wish in their drawings and may use watercolors, colored paper, magic markers, crayons, or some combination.  Students are encouraged to completely fill the page but keep the design simple. Too many details tend to get lost in the design. Bold colors work best for the printing process. Please note: Fabric designs and pencil drawings are not suitable to our printing process and will not be selected.

6.      Students must be advised that entry into this contest constitutes (1) a waiver of all copyrights students have in their entries, and (2) permission to republish entries without compensation.

7.      Drawings will not be returned.

8.      The winning entries from each grade level will be published on the Idaho State Department of Education Web site at www.sde.idaho.gov.

9.      Submissions must be postmarked by Friday, November 9, 2012. Results will be announced in December. Drawings may be mailed to:

State Department of Education

Attn: Portia Flynn
P.O. Box 83720

Boise, ID 83720-0027

If you have questions, please contact Portia Flynn at (208) 332-6812 or  pflynn@sde.idaho.gov.

Math Night for Parents!

Parents are in for a treat the evening of November 15 beginning at 6:30.  Dr. Jonathan Brendefer, a Boise State University professor, who started the Developing Mathematical Thinking (DMT)  project will be our guest speaker.  The DMT Project was started in 2004. The project orginally partnered with three schools in the Boise, Caldwell, and Emmett communities of southwestern Idaho and is now an excepted way of teaching mathematics in the state of Idaho.  In fact, every teacher who becomes certified in Idaho must take the class for certification.  Dr. Brendefer worked with Anser teachers in 2003-2004 as well, when he had two daughters attending the school.   Dr. Brendefer has conducted research in the area of mathematics for many years and has seen proven results in the improvement in students' mathematical thinking and schools' test scores.  Parents will have an opportunity to listen to Dr. Brendefer, ask questions, then go into their child's classroom to learn about Anser's math program and to experience some of the ways in which we "do math" at Anser.  Plan early...this is something you do not want to miss!
