SUMMER TIP FROM THE PASCO SCHOOL DISTRICT

Find books to read that tie into experiences that your child has. If you are going fishing or boating, find a book on the subject. This will help your child learn more about a new experience and help develop their interest.

EDGAR BROWN SUMMER CLOSURE

Work will begin in early June on the resurfacing of the athletic track and the replacement of the field turf at Edgar Brown Stadium sports complex. The project is expected to be finished by late August. The stadium will be closed to the public during construction.

The field turf was installed in 2002 with an expected eight-year life span. With proper maintenance, the District was able to extend it to 12 years. It is time now to replace the worn surfaces for the safety of Pasco's student athletes.

TEACHERS MATTER

Teachers Matter - McLoughlin Middle School
Please click to watch the video.

McLoughlin Middle School sixth grade Language Arts/ history teacher Cherie' Grego is a great example of why teachers matter.

McLoughlin Middle School eighth grade student Meg Nelson says Mrs. Grego is a teacher who has a passion for her subject matter, her students, and education in general. She says, "Mrs. Grego really taught me how to use my voice. Because of her class I want to go into politics. She helped me realize that what you think matters and that you can make a difference in the world."

WRESTLING CHAMP EXPLAINS 'TRUE GRIT'

Ochoa Middle School sixth grade Language Arts teacher Whitney Billman invited two-time state wrestling champion Timmy Martinez, a Pasco High School junior, to speak with her class on April 24 as part of her "True Grit Thursday" visitor series.

Every Thursday, Billman's class spends time recognizing, learning about, and celebrating true grit. They focus on the prominent characteristics of people with grit, including self-control, leadership, perseverance, bravery, zest, and hope. Every student picks out one character strength they have, one they want to work on, and one they see as important for their future. Every week Billman selects a public figure or athlete to highlight.

"I want my students to know that the hand of cards a person is dealt does not determine their destiny," says Billman. "Timmy Martinez was an immediate pick! The kids were so excited that someone they learned about in class was in Pasco School District."

Martinez, along with his father Esteban Martinez, Jr. and PHS Principal Raul Sital, talked to the class about his daily schedule, how he doesn't let things get him down, and how he juggles the challenges of being a successful student athlete.

The award recognizes Kraft's dedication to support literacy on her school bus. For the last six years, Kraft has been stocking books on her bus, reading to students at school stops, and passing out books to every student on the bus to read during transit.

FROST OVERPASS DEMO AND ROAD CLOSURE

Frost Elementary School overpass on 20th Avenue and Pearl Street will be taken down this summer due to structural problems.

The project will close 20th Avenue from Pearl Street to Highway 395/I-182 on Sunday, June 22 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Construction vehicles will be using 14th Avenue, Pearl Street, and 20th Avenue during this time period. Local residents may also see increased traffic on Pearl Street and 22nd Avenue due to established detours.

Neighbors will see staging work begin on June 21 and clean-up work continue for several days, but traffic should only be disrupted on June 22.

The overpass has been closed since last spring when District officials found the structural problems during an annual safety assessment. Since then, three crossing guards have been stationed at that stoplight to cross students safely to and from school every day.

The overpass was installed decades ago, long before a stoplight and crosswalk existed at 20th and Pearl. The overpass is no longer necessary and there would be an unreasonably high cost to replace it under new construction codes.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this project please contact Pasco School District at 546-2320.
