Important Reminders for College Bound Scholarship Program Students

Remember! June 30 is the deadline for this year's eighth grade students to sign up for Washington's College Bound Scholarship Program.

New data shows that more than 78 percent of low-income students enrolled in College Bound graduated on time last year-a nearly 19 percent jump in graduation rates between College Bound Scholarship students and low-income students not enrolled in the program.

Seniors: Please remember to file your FAFSA and apply for college. Students who plan to attend community college mistakenly believe that they can apply any time-this is not true! The popular classes fill up and they miss the college's financial aid deadlines when they wait until the last minute. The FAQs for College Bound Seniors web page answers College Bound questions.

CHS Stage Company Presents "Clue"
Clue

Chiawana High School's Chiawana Stage Company (CSC) presents a spoof on McCarthy-era paranoia and 1950s wholesomeness with a show based on a popular Parker Brothers board game "Clue" on May 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. in the Chiawana Black Box Theatre.

"Clue" was adapted for the stage by Jonathan Lynn and is directed by Todd Westendorf.

The show takes place on a dark and stormy night in 1954 at a dinner party at the swanky mansion of Ms. Boddy. Boddy's butler, Wadsworth, assigns each guest a colorful name: Mr. Green, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, Miss Scarlet, and Mrs. White.

A tale of blackmail, mystery, and foul play ensues, along with plenty of laughs, as each notorious character strives to keep their reputation clean amidst a bevy of dastardly doings.

This is the last show for six CSC seniors: Ansley Gerhard, who plays Mrs. White; Elyssa Nelson, who plays Ms. Boddy; Michael Simleness, who takes on the role of Colonel Mustard; Taylor Storaci, playing the butler Wadsworth; Haley Weis, who plays Miss Scarlet; and Savannah West, in the role of Mrs. Peacock.

Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. For more information call (509) 543-6786 ext. 5692.

MCLOUGHLIN 6th GRADE KARATE CHAMP TO COMPETE IN AUSTRALIA

Devon Brown
Devon Brown, a McLoughlin 6th grader, will compete at the Karate World Championships in Melbourne, Australia in May.

It is a childhood dream of many young athletes to become the best in the world, but how does one accomplish such a goal?

Hard work, a great coach and supportive parents according to Devon Brown, a sixth grade black belt karate champion who is a student at McLoughlin Middle School. On May 5, Devon will travel 23 hours to compete at the Karate World Championships in Melbourne, Australia as part of Team USA. Brown is one of only five 12 year olds in the nation to make the team and one of only six competitors from the Pacific Northwest. He is the only person from the Tri Cities to make the approximately 80-member team.

"It is a big time commitment," he acknowledges with a smile, "but I stay motivated because I think the guy I'm competing against is probably training right now, so I should be too."

Devon's ultimate goal in Melbourne is to win a gold medal to qualify for the Pan-Am Games which will be held in November.

"My future goals are to compete at the Olympics in 2020 after karate, hopefully, becomes an Olympic sport," he says. After the Olympics he wants to, "Become a fighter pilot with the Navy or Air Force, and when I retire at 30 or 32, move to Newport and open a seafood restaurant because I love seafood and I love to cook."

Devon travels to Walla Walla three times a week for a two hour practice. He does this while maintaining a 4.0 GPA at McLoughlin. When asked how he accomplishes his homework with so much time spent on the road he says a clipboard in the car comes in handy.

In addition to being named to Team USA, Devon has also qualified for Nationals in July and the Junior Olympics in August, both of which he competed at last year.

Pasco High School is proud to present "In the Heights" April 25-27 and May 2-3 at 7 p.m. in the Pasco High School Auditorium.

The play features an ensemble cast that chronicles three days in the tight-knit and largely Dominican-American community of Washington Heights, NY. Bodega owner Usnavi, played by Franklin Castellanos, longs to return to the Dominican Republic, the place he was born but cannot remember.

"We chose this play largely because of the subject matter," says Producer Robert Dennis, Pasco High School teacher and director of the 10th Avenue Singers. "The neighborhood where the play is set is populated by first, second and third generation Americans who have strong ties to a place that is far away and that they have never seen. This is the story of bridging cultures; this is the story of many of our students."

Pre-sale tickets can be purchased from student cast members or through the Pasco High School choir office by calling 543-6770 ex 3702 or online at www.PHSInTheHeights.com. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Reserved seating is also available for $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

Chess Elementary School 'Fiesta-val of Math' Showcases Innovative PEAK! Partnership

Fiestival of Math
A Chess Elementary student is using her math skills during Fiesta-Val of Math.

Chess Elementary School and Partners in Education All Kids, or PEAK!, partner Fiesta Foods teamed up to host a "Fiesta-val of Math" for students and families on April 18. Chess student dancers and musicians kicked off the event by providing entertainment outside the store. Students then moved throughout the store to different stations, where they had to calculate the price of different items which they would need to prepare a taco dinner. It was a family event with parents and siblings taking part in the "shopping" and enjoying the food samples provided throughout the store.

Thank you to Fiesta Foods, one of many local businesses that partners with our schools to create educational opportunities for Pasco students.
