Pasco Accepting Applications for Dual Language Kinders
Pasco School District is now accepting applications for the Two Way Dual Language Immersion Program through April 19.
The program is accepting applications from interested Pasco parents whose children are English speaking and will be first time kindergarten students in fall 2013. Prospective students will be tested April 8 through April 19 for the program. Acceptance into the program is based on eligibility, test scores, commitment for six years, and parent involvement.
Pasco School District implemented the Two-Way Dual Language Immersion Program in 2004. Through this exceptional education model, students learn to think, communicate, read and write in two languages: English and Spanish. The program begins in kindergarten and continues through grade seven. The classrooms, as much as possible, are composed of an equal number of English and Spanish speaking students, who learn in both languages.
Registration for kindergarten is currently open at all Pasco schools. All families with students who will turn five by August 31, 2013 are encouraged to register at their nearest school as early as possible.
For more information and application materials please contact LeAnn Nunamaker at 543-6748 or lnunamaker@psd1.org. |

PSD Board Member Darrell Toombs |
Darrell Toombs Jr. was selected to fill Pasco School Board Director Position # 5 during a special board session held March 19.
"We had a great candidate pool and really appreciate the participation of all of the candidates," says PSD Board President Sherry Lancon. "The decision was difficult, but ultimately it was Mr. Toombs' commitment to our schools through years of volunteering and support in the best interests of Pasco children that helped us make the decision."
Toombs is the manager of Yokes in Richland and has been a resident of Pasco for the past 10 years. He has been an active community member. He currently serves as a board member for Junior Achievement, Ignite Youth Mentoring, and West Richland Chamber of Commerce, and is an Action Team for Partnerships committee member at McLoughlin Middle School. Toombs is also a graduate of Leadership Tri Cities Class XV.
"I have three children attending Pasco Schools (at Chiawana High School, McLoughlin Middle School, and Livingston Elementary) which means I have a vested interest in the level of education Pasco School District provides for our students," says Toombs. "I am very excited for the opportunity to serve and I am looking forward to doing whatever I can to help our students and teachers."
Toombs will be sworn in as a member of the board at the regularly scheduled March 26 meeting. He was appointed to position #5, which was vacated by the resignation of Jeffery Dong last month. Toombs will run for election in the next general election in November 2013. |

Students in 10th grade will be working under the leadership of MaryBeth Tilson who teaches sophomore science classes. All SITE projects must meet standards for both effective environmental education and service learning.
