On the Up and Up with Mr. Smith

For the sake of holiday spirit, I am going to keep this short and sweet.

I appreciate how the BASIS organization respects my vacation time.  Even if I wanted to come to campus during our two-week hiatus, the doors are locked!

We shut down for a reason: a break means a break.

And so I am urging all our wonderful BASIS Chandler families to think about this as it applies to your sons and daughters.  Please do not scold them for not loading their backpacks with books.  In fact, I told my 8th grade students this week to not even bring a book home!

I see every day how hard these guys and girls work.  They deserve to relax, enjoy their time away from the grind, and simply be kids!

Because after all, when they do wind up returning in January, there will be plenty of work waiting for them!

Have a safe and enjoyable Winter Break,

Mr. Smith

There will be a representative from Barrett at our information session on February 5, 2014 at 4:15 PM in the theatre.  Parents are welcome.

Get to know Mr. Hanson

If you could teach a different subject, what would it be?

I would teach math. My algebra teacher used to ask me to tutor students who were absent, and I really enjoyed it. I wanted to be a math teacher before I wanted to be an English teacher.

If you could be one for just 24 hours, what cereal box cartoon character would you be? Why?

I have always thought it would be fun to fly through space, so I would be the alien on Quisp cereal.

What do you consider to be the most valuable thing you own: when you were a child/teenager/now?

When I was a child, it was my first bicycle, an orange and black one with an awesome black banana seat. As a teenager, it was my stereo--turntable, big speakers, lots of simulated wood-grain plastic. Nowadays, as far as a person can own it, the most valuable thing I own is my education.

What was the weirdest food you've ever eaten?

I had some delicious squid sashimi in Okayama, Japan. That in itself is not so weird, maybe, but the fact that it was still pulsating as it was brought to our table struck me as a bit unusual. It was fresh and delicious!

If you could spend 15 minutes with any person dead or alive, who would it be  and why?

I would spend some time with J.R.R. Tolkien. I'd love to talk to him about his writing, his scholarship, his view of humanity, and how it feels to be the author of the definition of "walrus."
