BASIS Chandler Calendar
Dear Parents,

I'd like to take a moment to congratulate all the students who participated in the Science Fair Open House. Students had the opportunity to show their science projects to their family and friends, get suggestions from the Science teachers, and practice explaining their project.

Student boards included a research report, pictures, hypothesis and conclusion, log book, and graphs and charts for a greater understanding.

How impressed I was listening to Lower School students explaining their project with so much knowledge and poise, they were a great example to the daily teaching at BASIS.

You may have noticed the Chandler Police in our parking lot during the past few weeks. Local police have partnered with schools to create a sense of safety, and we welcome them anytime with their presence at BASIS Chandler.

Happy Friday and enjoy the three day weekend!

Stephanie Terrell

Head of School

Ms. Lu's 7A and 7B Mandarin class celebrated Chinese New Year this week with food (they made dumplings), songs, games (with characters and pinyin) and red envelop with real Chinese money in it!
2013/2014 Elective Course Options
We are excited this year to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our Upper School Elective Course selection.  After sitting down with each grade and explaining the process, we feel confident that choosing the electives online will give both students and parents a more thorough opportunity to make the choice that best fits the students' academic career.

A few important points to keep in mind when choosing your electives:
  •  All Upper School students must take a minimum of  one elective course with the option to take two.
  •  Priority for all electives goes to the highest grade level.
  •  It is the discretion of the Upper School Director as to whether or not a student may enroll in an AP elective.
  •  Students may not receive their first choice elective.  It is imperative you list all five options.
  •  Some elective courses - particularly AP electives -- may have pre-requisites or restrictions based on grade level experience.
  •  The Arizona Department of Education requires all high school students to take one Fine Art elective in order to graduate.  BASIS Chandler considers any of our music, drama, or art electives as fulfilling the state mandate.
  •  Any rising Senior who still needs the Fine Art elective will be notified at the grade level meetings.
  •  Physical education is NOT a mandatory elective and does not count as a Fine Art.
  •  8th grade students do NOT receive high school credit for elective courses, unless they take an AP elective.

Please Note:  ALL elective choices must be made by Tuesday, February 19th.

Thanks, and I look forward to continuing to serve your students as they progress through BASIS Chandler.

Meet Mr. Hanson

Mr. Hanson teaches five sections of our 6th grade English classes. He is BASIS Chandler's subject advisor for the English department as well as a co-adviser for the National Junior Honor Society.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Education in International Teaching from Framingham State University. He holds an Arizona K-8 standard elementary school teaching certificate.

Mr. Hanson's career has taken him around the world. Before coming to BASIS, he taught at a charter school in Phoenix, at an international school in Brazil, in Japanese public schools on the northern island of Hokkaido, and at a technical high school in Slovakia. He tries to get out and enjoy the great state of Arizona with his family whenever possible. When he's not outdoors, Mr. Hanson enjoys reading, painting fantasy miniatures, speaking Portuguese, and talking about anything related to Brazil, especially soccer.
