BASIS Chandler Calendar

Dear Parents,

Happy Friday!

We have had a busy, but wonderful week at BASIS Chandler. Our Future Nights were a huge success, and highly attended. We appreciate the parents and students who came out in support.

Today is the final day to turn in the yellow envelopes from our Annual Teacher Fund. Our goal was for 100% parent participation, and we are still short by 25%. On Monday, we will be asking parents to please return the ATF envelopes. To date you have generously donated $176,500, and every cent will be passed to our new and returning teachers. To enable us to achieve our high academic standards, your financial support is crucial.

Many employers have a matching gift program. Please check with your employer to see if this is available.

The link for Intel is https://secure15.easymatch.com/INTEL

Thank you for bringing your child to BASIS Chandler, and again, thank you for previous and future donations to the Annual Teacher Fund.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Terrell

Head of School

Skate for a Cause
National Honor Society is hosting a fundraiser event at Polar Ice Gilbert, which is located at 2305 E Knox Rd Gilbert, AZ 85296. The event will take place on Saturday, February 9 from 12:00pm-3:00pm. Tickets will be $10 with skates included and proceeds will go to the Annual Teacher Fund. Come with your friends and have an enjoyable time!

On the Up and Up

Thank you for taking the time out of your schedules to support our BASIS Chandler Future Nights. I thoroughly enjoyed producing the video project and speaking to parents and students about the direction our school is headed.

Part of what I love about my job is the challenges it throws my way. I am constantly thinking of ways to engage my students and the parents whenever I have the chance. We put together, what we feel, is a strong representation of our commitment to the BASIS Chandler community. Our aim was to instill a sense of our confidence in what BASIS Chandler can offer your sons and daughters as they progress to college.

In the next week we will be ready to release the elective options, I will personally sit down with each grade level (11th through 7th) to explain the selection process. BASIS curriculum mandates all Upper School students choose one elective course per year - either in the morning (7:40-8:30) or afternoon (3:00-3:50). There is also the option to take two electives.

We are moving towards an online system this year that gives both parents and students a chance to efficiently and effectively make good choices. We'll also be handing students (during the elective selection sessions) a brochure that includes a course description, the time-of-day the course is offered, and any additional information relevant to the course.

Here are some further details significant for students and parents to consider:

  • Priority for all electives goes to the highest grade level. Students may not receive their first choice elective, so in the selection process I will stress how it important it is to choose a solid second or third option.
  • Some elective courses - particularly AP electives -- may have pre-requisites or restrictions based on grade level experience. It is ultimately my discretion to advise students on elective courses.
  • The Arizona Department of Education requires all high school students to take one Fine Art elective in order to graduate. BASIS Chandler considers any of our music, drama, or art electives as fulfilling the state mandate.
  • Physical education is NOT a mandatory elective and does not count as a Fine Art.
  • 8th grade students do NOT receive high school credit for elective courses, unless they take an AP elective.

I am excited about bringing new and better options to our students. The growth of our elective program reflects the diversity, passion, and experience of our faculty. BASIS Chandler will continue to push the limits of our school and staff to bring students options that are stimulating, engaging, and preparing for college.

Upcoming SAT Dates and Registration Information

Testing
Unlike the PSAT, you have several chances to take the SAT prior to applying to colleges and universities. Many colleges and universities will "Super Score" your SAT scores. That means that the college that you are applying to will look at your HIGHEST SAT score from each section of the tests that you have taken. Look at the chart below for an example of how Super Scoring works:

Critical Reading

Mathematics

Writing

Test 1

650

700

710

Test 2

690

680

720

Test 3

700

690

700

If you are applying to a college or university that Super Scores SAT scores, the SAT score that they would consider would be 2,120. Beware that there are some colleges and universities that do not Super Score and will only consider the scores that you choose to submit.

The dates for upcoming SAT tests are as follows:

Registration Deadline

Late Registration (fee applies)

Please drop your books off in the boxes located in the front office. This drive has been extended until February 14, so please donate so all children can share a love for reading!
