Dear BASIS Chander Parents,
The BASIS Chandler Annual Teacher Fund is January 28-February 1, 2013. This week is our school's most important fundraising priority. It provides BASIS Chandler parents and supporters with an opportunity to help us attract and reward top-performing teachers, those who inspire students to learn and achieve outstanding results, by providing them with merit-based bonuses. Our goal is for 100% of BASIS Chandler parents to participate in the Annual Teacher Fund. We recommend an annual donation of $1500 per family, which represents a small fraction of the annual cost of an equivalent private-school education.

Starry Winter Night Masquerade Dance |  BASIS Chandler's student led League of Leaders is hosting a Starry Winter Night Masquerade dance tonight Friday, January 18th! The Lower School dance is from 5-7PM. The Upper School dance is from 7:30-9:30PM. Students must be picked up immediately following the end of their respective dance time in the courtyard. Tickets are $10 at the door. Pictures will be taken at the dance for $5 and food will be available for purchase as well. Fundraiser & Night out with the Phoenix Suns |  The BASIS Chandler Boosters is hosting a fundraiser and night out with the Phoenix Suns on Friday, March 1st at 7PM. Tickets are only $30 a piece and this includes a free Suns gift, early entry to watch the players warm up, a special and group welcome on the video board, group seating in the upper level. A portion of the ticket sales goes back to BASIS Chandler! To sign up simply click on the link below, fill out the form, attach your payment and drop both the form and payment into the Booster Drop Box located in the school lobby. BASIS Chandler Speech and Debate Club News | |
The BASIS Chandler Speech and Debate Club continues to make rapid improvements in its overall tournament performance. The BASIS Chandler S&D Club attended the Southwest Championship hosted by Arizona State University on January 11-13. Schools from as far away as Anchorage, Alaska participated in this prestigious tournament and BASIS Chandler students performed admirably. 13 students participated in a variety of events including, Policy Debates, Lincoln-Douglass Debates, Public Forum Debates, and Dramatic Interpretation events. Maryam Masud (9) came in 9th place in her event. Congratulations to all the members of the Speech and Debate Tournament who participated in this tournament. |
Southern California University Visit Trip Term Project | 
All 9th-11th grade students received information about the Southern California University Visit Trip Term Project. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to visit and learn more about some of the outstanding colleges and universities that are within driving distance of the Phoenix area. We will be visiting such top-ranked universities as California Institute of Technology, UCLA, and Harvey Mudd College among others. There will also be some educational fun built in with a learning experience at Disneyland combined with a day of fun at the Happiest Place on Earth. If you are interested in having your son or daughter take part in this outstanding opportunity, please contact Mr. Bowley at robert.bowley@basischandler.org.

Congratulations to our Geography Bee Winners |  Congratulations to Aniruddh Kannan (8Li) on winning first place at the Geography Bee. Congratulations also to Vaisha Nair (6P) on taking second place. We congratulate both of them and wish Aniruddh good luck on his written test to qualify for the state round! |
Congratulations to our Chess Team | |
 Congratulations to our BASIS Chandler 7th Grade Chess Team!! They won 1st place at the Arizona Chess State Championship on January 12th. They also took first place in the K-12 Blitz round as well. This group consisted of Jake Hum, Prateek Pinisetti, and Rahul Reddy. We congratualate all of our participants!

All Phoenix Area BASIS Spelling Bee Tournament | |
 The All Phoenix Area BASIS Spelling Bee Tournament will be held next Friday, January 25th at BASIS Phoenix. 10 of our outstanding spellers will be representing BASIS Chandler, hoping to bring home the championship and advancing to the Maricopa County Spelling Bee. The BASIS Spelling Bee Team members are: Latavya Chintada, Bhargav Chirravuri, Harshini Darapu, Alex Fan, Jaeyoung Kang, Nithara Murthy, Swetha Rajagopal, Benita Simon, Shakthi Srinivasan, Kristy Taing.

Meet Mr. Sterbenz |
Mr. Sterbenz teaches three of our 7th grade English classes and three of our 7th grade Logic classes. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Literature, Writing and Film (Magna Cum Laude) from Arizona State University. Mr. Sterbenz received an Arizona Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education for English and Language Arts in 2010 as well as an Arizona Structured English Immersion Teaching Certificate. When he is not teaching, Mr. Sterbenz can be be found enjoying a cup of coffee as he works in his garden or reads a fantasy novel. He is fond of the outdoors, animals, documentaries, and especially documentaries about animals outdoors. He loves spending time with Katie, his wife of five years, and their goldendoodle, Olive. He is so glad he gets to teach at BASIS, and he can often be heard bragging about the achievements of his most incredible seventh-grade students. |
