New Progressive Alliance

SPOTLIGHT: NPA State Liaisons

We've come a long way, baby.

In the two short years since being spurred into existence by the shocking betrayals of the Democratic party in 2010, the New Progressive Alliance has officially become a 527 non-profit, launched a website, established a social media presence, ratified the Unified Platform, established an organizational framework with an all-volunteer staff, and participated in our first general election - endorsing 54 candidates from 23 states!

But despite the whirlwind of the past two years, our real work is just beginning. If we are ever to mount a serious challenge to the two-party system in this country, we are going to have to grow our organization and our numbers. So the next focus of our endeavors is to establish a nationwide "ground game" - with a strong local presence in every state.

State Liaisons are the heart of this next phase of growth. Their mission is to:

  • Represent NPA in their region at local meetings and events, in order to spread the word about the NPA's mission, familiarize people with the Unified Platform, and build our ground organization through recruiting local volunteers who are interested in working at the grassroots, as members of the NPA Ground Crew.
  • Serve as a two-way conduit of information between their region and the national organization, including news about meetings/events they've attended, new volunteers joining their local NPA Ground Crew, and ideas for helping the organization grow.
  • Obtain commitments to the Unified Platform from political candidates, who may thereby earn the endorsement of the NPA.

Right now, the NPA has 8 Liaisons in 7 states. We want to at least triple that number over the next three months, with folks eager to begin identifying and attending local events this summer to spread the word about NPA.

Liaisons should know that they are joining a 100-percent volunteer organization, and will play an important role in establishing real Progressive alternatives to the two major parties. The NPA will provide full training, literature, promotional materials, and the support of a committed national team that will never forget you are working as a volunteer. Because we all are!

To make a real difference in our nation's future, bring your passion for People First governance to bear as an NPA State Liaison. Visit NewProgs.org, click the Volunteer! tab, and complete the information form. You will be personally contacted by a member of the national team within 48 hours. And thank you!

A POTENTIAL WIN? Election Reform

and Corporate Accountability

The NPA is dedicated to furthering the goals defined in the Unified Progressive Platform

Joining with over 100 partner organizations of the Corporate Reform Coalition, the NPA last year petitioned the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to mandate disclosure of corporate political activity, in keeping with our objective of increasing transparency and accountability for corporate political spending.

In response to an overwhelming display of popular pressure - and as one of the last actions of departing SEC Chair Mary Shapiro's term - the agency announced it will indeed "consider a proposed rule to require that public companies provide disclosure to shareholders regarding the use of corporate resources for political activities."

While consideration is not implementation, the Supreme Court's emphasis on the need for transparency in relation to its Citizens United decision, in combination with polls showing up to 81% of Americans of both parties favor disclosure plus the high level of public activism around this issue, gives reason to hope that reform may indeed occur. (Read more about the Coalition's initiative here.)

SOTU:  The Progressive Response

President Obama's State of the Union address this past Tuesday failed to impress.  Another style over substance performance that barely scratched the surface of what ails us.  Those of us in the mood for a more realistic appraisal and alternative solutions are fortunate to be able to turn to NPA's own Kevin Zeese ("Warning, Saccharin Causes Cancer") and Jill Stein ("Our Green State of the Union") for Progressive perspectives.

Yours in the struggle,
