  Remembering Dear Friends

I would like to dedicate a section of this Newsletter to two of my close friends who passed away recently.

Dennis Gobets worked in Creative Services when I was at Apple and we had stayed in touch over the years. He was an amazing guy, with a truly inspiring mind and passion for what he did.

Milt Olin was the COO at Napster and a fellow pioneer in the music and technology world with me. He was a dear friend and trusted mentor.

I'm missing them both so much, as are my colleagues in their respective communities. I'd just like to remind you all how important it is to let each other know what we mean to one another in our lives TODAY because we really don't know from one moment to the next when we'll breathe our last breath.

December Mentoring Moment

Question:  How much does collaboration matter?

This question came in through my Inner Circle Mentoring Group this week - and it's poignant as I say good-bye to two amazing friends and collaborators. The most amazing reality s that the GIFT of many projects is the people we get to work with - and impact.

The truth is that collaboration is everything in my book.  It's why I do the work that I do and integral to the way most Apple Alums have built their careers after leaving Apple.

We formed alliances at Apple that were much more like fraternities - filled with camaraderie and vision.  I've endeavored not only to build projects and collaborations like this since leaving Apple, I've endeavored to create those types of alliances for other people. Bringing my role as super connector to some of the best projects and most amazing teams out there has been a motivation to provide you, my community, with the best results 24/7, 365.

As we approach 2014, think about collaboration differently.  You may have an inner circle - but your best ideas (and results) often come from outside of those circles.

I'd love to hear what you're working on now - or next - and talk about the movers and out-of-the-box leaders in my own circles who might support your biggest success.

Quote from a Friend

"The short answer to what Apple got right was a vision of ideas. Turning science fiction into reality. Turning things we all talked about in the early computer journals, like "Dr. Dobbs," into reality.  It was far fetched at that time.  Everything was lines and codes and you really had to be able to program to make it work.  Even canned programs were pretty butty.  So what Apple got right was coming up with, "Hey, we can DO this. We can make "Danny Dunn and the Homework Machine" come to life."

~ Dennis Gobets,

from The Magic and Moxie of Apple
