Kelli's Comments...

Kelli Richards, on Steve Jobs

"All credit to Steve, everything he tried to do was the right thing and it never would have worked without him at the helm... I loved it when the iPad came out and he literally, single handedly changed the economic structure of the publishing industry overnight, by his own design - nobody got a vote."

3 Best Practices in Coaching to Thrive in the Digital Age

Digital Distribution. It's become the holy cross of the music industry. A symbol of both redemption and do I risk saying it? Agony. As the digital age comes into its full adolescence, iTunes, Amazon, Napster, Spotify, Rhapsody, HMV, Zune, and dozens of other digital music distributors are literally re-writing the rules around IP, Copyright, and like some Orwellian universe, language itself. Not to mention billions less in revenue, at a time when music is shared and heard exponentially more than it was ten years ago.

The Digital Age. There are amazing benefits, like being able to build an audience at the speed of light --and amazing losses, like the fact that music is carried to us, most often, as a singular, solo experience through two wires jacked almost directly into our brains. It's not hard to jump into the wayback machine and remember that music used to be experienced by a gang of friends (before gang meant bust-a-cap on someone) who carefully slipped out a piece of vinyl or cassette that transported a room full of people to another place. Virtual reality. Now?  Well, music and artists have more outlets to reach more ears than anyone could have ever imagined, but there's been a trade-off in the process.

There's No Going Back.  That's one thing about technology; like life, it only rolls forward. Hopefully, however, we will learn from the mistakes and create a bridge. The little speakers that we plug our MP3s into are NOT that bridge, but I have no doubt it is coming. In a recent interview with Hollywood producer, Gary Goldstein, we talked about the amazing opportunities in this brave new digital world, and the most important ingredient for any artist - a coach. The truth is that the tech is out there, and the marketplace is out there, artists just need a guide to help them build those bridges and collaborations and to lead them to the right opportunities. This newsletter is devoted to highlighting just a few aspects of bridging those chasms between digital distribution and how emerging artists and disruptors can successfully participate.

So here are your best three practices for Coaching (and why you need one!) in the new digital age. They're simple but definitely not easy.

#1. FIND a good Coach - not just a colleague you lean on who gives you advice - get a real coach.  One you seek out, who says yes, and who understands your unique message and methodology.  Ideally someone who is also a respected thought-leader with a proven track record of success in your field.

#2. Once you have a strong coach in place, develop a clear path of objectives and goals (a blueprint of sorts). Next, create a timeline and an accountability path. Finally, be sure to ask for what you need. Your coach should come with knowledge, insights, endless inspiration & ideas -- and hopefully, connections.

#3. Continue to learn and grow, no matter what. As technology changes, opportunities for artists and content creators abound. For instance, if you haven't tried StageIt yet, Evan Lowenstein's new gig, you're missing a fantastic, different path to building your brand - and your fan base. And this is just one example of how tech meets artistry to create real results. Stay on top of this industry and work with your peers to be sure you're doing everything you can to grab more than your 15 minutes of fame.

I'll be launching a coaching club later this summer for artists and content creators. It will help you to achieve these three best practices. If you're interested in participating, or if you have any questions about this, please feel free to drop my team and I a note at [email protected].

To your success,

Industry Interviews

An Intimate "Fireside Chat" with Hollywood Producer, Gary Goldstein

An excerpt of Kelli's Q&A with Hollywood Producer, Gary Goldstein, an inspiring voice in the film and music industries. Gary Goldstein produced one of the most iconic cultural expressions of the last generation: Pretty Woman. He has gone on to mentor many of the leading creative voices in music and film. He is an accomplished film producer, an author, a speaker, an innovator, a philanthropist, and a great guy. This is definitely one of the best fireside chats yet. (To hear this entire interview, please visit the Resources Page on my Website.)

Kelli Richards: Gary, put on your consultant's hat for a moment, if you will. When you look forward at the entertainment industry, what do you think is the biggest challenge we face, and what kinds of solutions do you see down the road?

Gary Goldstein: Very few people understand - artists and everyone haven't really been taught -- business literacy. They don't know the meaning of it. The value of your intellectual property is so precious that to give it up for a royalty after expenses... well, the landscape is changing. Make it your mission to find out what works for YOU. Get engaged, get involved in these conversations. Become joyful and excited about learning the marketing piece - the business of your art. That's never going to be less than central to your success. You know, Lady Gaga, she didn't invent innovative marketing in today's sandbox. But she and her team simply mastered it better than most. Her talent's evident, sure, but her unspeakable, astonishing success is the stuff of brilliant, innovative marketing.

Kelli Richards: That's because she herself does that. She has a team around her that's wonderful, but she herself, makes it a point to understand and to harness the power of social media and technology. She actively embraces it, takes it on, leverages it to its fullest - and for example, understands the power of mailbox money with royalties in her retirement years, so she doesn't give up her publishing rights. Kelli's Picks: Resources and Events

Resources

Leave it to YouTube to partner with artists to help them make market their work and create revenue every time someone embeds their music or plays their videos.  The income stream is created by allowing relevant ads to be displayed with videos, or by making them available for rental via streaming. Artists have to be approved, but do get to keep all the rights to their music, plus build fans and make an income also.

MyStudio.Net

MyStudio is a stand-alone, state-of-the-art professional audio and video HD recording studio that allows consumer and professional users the opportunity to create professional studio quality audio and video sessions for only $20. Berklee Online  Berkleemusic is the online school of Berklee College of Music, the world's premier institution for the study of contemporary music for over 65 years, offering over 130 online courses, including: Music Production, Music Business. Guitar, Bass, Songwriting, Music Theory, Arranging, Voice and 125 others. Summer Term Starts June 27th.

StageIt - "A new kind of pay-per-view" - Billboard Magazine

(Yes, we featured this one once before, but thought it was worth mentioning again.) StageIt is about sharing amazing moments between events. Did a friend drop by to jam? StageIt. Working on a new tune? StageIt. The front row seat is the most expensive in the house, but the place everyone wants to be is backstage. Founded by pop artist Evan Lowenstein (of Evan and Jaron, the brother duo that scored three Top 40 hits), Evan created a web-based platform that allows artists to give live interactive performances to their fans and get paid for it. By artists, for artists!
