December 2015 - Moldova Refugee Crisis
|
|
| ACCTS' mission is "To assist in the development of Christian leaders in the armed forces of the world and in the establishment and growth of military Christian fellowships (MCFs)." For the past decade, we have been working to help strengthen the MCF of Moldova. Under the leadership of Eduard Rosca, Moldova's MC has grown to be one of the strongest in the region, even though Moldova is the poorest country in Europe.
The military conflict in eastern Ukraine has spread during the past 11 months. Military and civilian families have been seen their homes destroyed by the fighting, and have been forced to flee the area, taking only their documents and a few possessions with them. So far, more than 1.5 million people have fled, with about 800,000 displaced within Ukraine and the rest scattering to neighboring countries.
Thousands of these refugees have come to Moldova because no visa is required for Ukrainian nationals. To date, Moldovan churches estimate that some 60,000 refugees are living in Moldova. Many of these refugees are families with young children, so Moldovan families have generously given up a room in their apartments.
In early November, Eduard, together with a local pastor, Ivan Ivanovich, developed a plan to assist Christian Ukrainian refugees. Relying on God's leading for financial and material support, they contacted local churches, hospitals, and friends for donations to this massive effort. Pastor Ivanovich located two large storage buildings in a guarded compound, and members of his church pay the rent. Another Christian brother graciously let the MCF use an old Soviet era summer camp at no cost for five years, and the MCF is making the cabins into living quarters for refugees. Other volunteers are sorting through the boxes of donations and distributing them to refugee families.
How can you help? Military Christian Fellowships and churches across Europe are gathering used clothing, furniture, and non-perishable food to be trucked to Moldova to support this initiative. Use of the trucks has been donated; but the owners need funding for the fuel to make these trips. (A 2,000-mile round trip costs about $550.)
Would you partner with ACCTS and the MCF of Moldova to get these items where they are so desperately needed? Donations may be sent to ACCTS at P.O. Box 27239, Denver, CO 80227 for "Disaster Relief, or you can donate on line at www.accts.org. Go to "Donate", then "Donate by Credit Card" and choose the "Disaster Relief." In the comment box please specify that your contribution is for Ukrainian refugee relief.
