AN ACCTS staff member recently returned from a trip to Moldova where he witnessed the local Military Christian Fellowship (MCF) living out Romans 12:9-20: "Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor . . . Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
Since the breakup of the Soviet Union in the early 90's, the Moldovan military has been cut significantly, and now numbers about 5,000, a reduction of nearly 50%. That God has been at work in this small and impoverished country (the poorest in Europe), however, is evident in that during the same period, the Moldova MCF has grown in both numbers and maturity, even though many of its members have lost their military salaries.
The recent conflict in neighboring Ukraine has brought over 100,000 refugees to Moldova, and the Moldova MCF has implemented a Ukrainian Refugee Initiative to help meet their needs. They have established storage facilities for non-perishable food, clothing, medical supplies, and building materials. They are also rehabilitating a former Soviet Youth Summer Camp to house refugees who have fled the fighting in Eastern Ukraine.
During his visit with the MCF leadership, the ACCTS staff member was invited to participate in developing a business plan to publicize the refugee Initiative with a short video on the project, organize media presentations, and involve the world-wide Association of Military Christian Fellowships and its three principal supporting organizations (ACCTS, MMI in the UK, and MSO in Korea) in mobilizing other MCFs and churches to help. Since Moldova is landlocked, the logistics challenges are great, with most materials coming through Romania.
