Countdown to Hurricane Sandy
Hurricane Sandy is a sprawling storm that is expected to bring historic flooding to low lying coastal and river areas and significant rain, wind, and waves to New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and the rest of the Northeast U.S.
Forecasts for New York State indicate that this is not a storm to ignore. The potential for widespread heavy rain, storm surges, and dangerous winds are predicted to be at historic levels. Structures in the hurricane's path may be at risk and there is potential for widespread loss of utilities. We assume and hope most heritage organizations have been "all hands on deck!" preparing for the storm.
Here are some tips to help you prepare - if you are getting a late start:
- Keep contact information for key staff, services, and resources with you at all times.
- Review your emergency response plan and have it within reach.
- Back up your electronic records and store the back up in a safe place off site.
- Move priority collections out of basements and off floors.
- Gather plastic sheeting for covering collections, file cabinets, and computer equipment stored in vulnerable locations. Identify and, if necessary, acquire alternative power sources such as generators.
- Our colleagues from the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts provide a list of over 100 vendors and associations for whom to call to assist with your recovery needs. Knowing whom to call saves time and allows staff to respond as quickly as possible in an emergency.
