This has been an amazing year for us at GoldenEar and we'd like to take a moment to thank all of you for continued support and enthusiasm. Without you it would be pretty quiet around here.

This issue of our newsletter includes an overview of room acoustic basics and some simple recommendations. Room acoustics is a combination of science and a little bit of magic. Next there's an article about the Dolby Atmos demos we ran to rave reviews at this year's CEDIA Expo in Denver. Atmos, Dolby's new object-based surround sound audio format, takes the term "sonic immersion" to a whole new level. Finally, in Sandy's Place we hear about GoldenEar's first ever participation in the Rock Mountain Audio Fest, an exciting consumer audio and video show.

Acoustic Treatments For Your Listening Room?

In a previous edition of the GoldenEar newsletter we discussed several issues pertaining to room acoustics. In this edition we'll discuss some guidelines and methods to potentially improve the sound of your system in your room. As we have pointed out in almost every issue, we fully understand that you have to temper your desire to enjoy the best music and soundtrack reproduction in your home with the demands of domestic tranquility.

Before we start it's important to note that many typical US dens/great rooms/living rooms are acoustically acceptable. Maybe not great, but at least OK. But that doesn't mean they couldn't be improved through the judicious use of acoustic room treatments. As we've pointed out in the past however, bass standing waves exist in pretty much every domestic space creating serious peaks and nulls throughout the area. Before we get down to standing wave issues, let's look at room treatments for midrange and high frequencies.

GoldenEar's Atmos Demo Rocks CEDIA Trade Show


The CEDIA Trade Show this year was all about the big introduction of Dolby Atmos for the home, the first really new audio technology for home theater is two decades! And GoldenEar was right there in the thick of it with what the press called "The Best Real Home-Atmos Demo at CEDIA".

The system was based on the spectacular Triton One as the left/right mains, with Triton Twos for L/R surrounds, with all four built-in Triton subwoofers handling the LFE channel! A SuperCenter XL completed the 5.1 system, and four Invisa HTR-7000s added the Atmos "height" channels for a complete 5.1.4 Atmos home theater system, "done right".

"The Atmos demo from GoldenEar, however, was a 5.1.4 setup with five conventional channels, 4 true ceiling speakers (no reflective Atmos here), and four subs. It was both impactful and at the same time subtle in a way that will please many audiophiles with at least some interest in home theater... the experience convinced me, at least in these fledgling days of Atmos (I remain open minded on this), that true ceiling speakers just might produce the best Atmos results."

Sandy's Place - Triton One's Rock This Year's RMAF

With the introduction of the flagshipTriton One, I decided that GoldenEar should make its first appearance at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest (RMAF) in Denver this year. With the addition of our flagship Triton One, I really felt we had a product that could compete with the stratospheric -priced products common to this audiophile event.

 

Well, I think I was right - just check out just a few of the accolades we received from our Triton One demo (and even one for Aon 3's in another brand's room!):

 

Tom Norton / Stereophile 

GoldenEar consistently scores high at any show they choose to be in, and this year was no exception. It would be impossible for me to say that it was one of the four best exhibits at the show, since I missed a lot of rooms. But of those I saw and heard it was, for me, near the top. What made the GoldenEar exhibit surprising was that it was being driven by a modest set of electronics (by today's standards): a Marantz SA11S3 CD/SACD player ($4000) and a PM11S3 integrated amplifier ($5000). 

 

Stephen Stone: Top Five Systems at RMAF / The Absolute Sound 

Sandy Gross' GoldenEar speakers produce exceptional sound that rivals systems costing 10x more. For 2014 RMAF the GoldenEar Triton Ones were mated with a Marantz SA-11S3 player and PM-11 S3 integrated amplifier. The sound was clean, clear, musical, and completely involving.
