Message from Lynn Handy
DSC Executive Director
Lynn with Jeremy YGR 2012
Lynn Handy joins Accessible Sailor and DSC Fan, Jeremy for a photo opp at the "Ya' Gotta Regatta" fundraising and sailing event held last September.

Question of the day!  Can you guess the total percentage of each category of revenue for the Downtown Sailing Center?

Here are the categories:

Membership fees __%

Event Fees ___%

Donations (including Grants) ___%

Total Tuition __%

Now click here to see if your guess is correct!

The Downtown Sailing Center staff and board have been working hard to develop strategies to increase our revenue in all areas.

DSC to Launch Annual Appeal
2012 YGR

Next week is going to be the kick off for the DSC 2013 Annual Appeal. The DSC has a goal of $20,000 that will be used for general operating for the season.

We are going to make the campaign engaging and fun with special events, recognitions and member stories.  The campaign will run from March 14th-May 16th. Let us know if you interested in sharing your volunteer or member story.

We would love to share it with everyone. Please email Lynn Handy at lynn@downtonwsailing.org

Fleet & Facilities Update
"Shipshape Snapshot!"
Fleet Update 022813

Key to above graphic which will be updated weekly illustrating progress on Fleet Maintenance:

Boats to the right of the, "finish line," are shipshape and ready for the launch of the DSC Sailing Season, commencing April 2013.

Green Boats: Access Dinghies

Blue Boats: Sonars

Yellow Boats: J/22s.

Fleet Update

Spring Ho!

Spring snow, Spring thaw, Spring Cleaning!

Baltimore was spared Chicago's fate, and the spring work continues to prep the fleet.

Tidewater has done a great job with the hulls of our J/22s and our first Sonar (Scooby) has been hauled in preparation for a great Access-able Season. OJ and Jester are on the hard, while Joey and Jalapeno returned to the DSC yesterday. Rigs need to be stepped and tuned, booms need to be attached and sheets run, and all of our boats need a good-ol' spring cleaning with soap and water. The pleas may seem incessant but there is much work to be accomplished.

Cruising Work Party 2013 Meanwhile, work commenced last week on Ithaca and Big Indian! The Cruising Council has asked for young volunteers to come out and lower the mean age of the volunteers (which was 59 last Saturday!). Come on, you young bucks! Roll up those sleeves and help get these boats in ship shape order.

Though volunteerism has been a little slow the past few weeks, it looks like the weather is going to be beautiful this week. No rain, no snow, plenty of sun, and a high around 50! Register today and show your support for the DSC. You can find out more about the Day Fleet Work Party here, and you can find out more about the Cruising Work Party here.

Skipper Practice, Orientation and Checkouts

The warm weather is quickly approaching and it's time to shake the rust off of your sailing skills. The DSC believes it's important for every skipper to attend the checkout to learn procedures and illustrate the essential skills. We are offering three group checkouts dates to make the process easier and more manageable.

Keep in mind, it is mandatory for all skippers to be checked out by the final May 11th date.

Guidelines and rubric are now available online. Please check them out. If you score an 80 or better you will NOT have to complete a checkout in 2014.

To view these and other essential DSC documents, please Click Here to launch the DSC Resources Page.

To help you prepare for the checkout we are providing two on the water practice days.  So come to the work party then jump on a boat to practice your skills.

Click the following links to Register for the Checkout Prep Session of your choice:

Saturday, March 9th

Saturday, March 16th

Sign up now for one of the group checkout dates.  We strongly encourage you to bring a friend to make the process fun and enjoyable. If you are unable to make any of the following dates please email Stuart Proctor at  stuart@downtownsailing.org.

There will be a $20 scheduling fee for those who are unable to attend one of the group sessions.

March DSC Member Social
@ Bluegrass Tavern in Federal Hill
~ Sunday, March 24, 2013
DSC Brunch Gathering 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Each month, Bluegrass Tavern chooses a charity or organization to support by donating 10% of their total gross earnings for one day.

The Downtown Sailing Center is enormously grateful to be selected for the "Charity of the Month," in March.

We invite all of the DSC Members, Supporters, Friends, and Volunteers to pour through the doors of Bluegrass for Brunch, Lunch, or Supper, on March 24th.  Sample the venue's succulent and noteworthy menu options, impressive wine offerings and pairings, and smooth bourbons.  Information about Bluegrass can be found on their website.

While this is not a "typical" DSC Member Social, by attending and your purchase of food and beverage from the venue will result in a donation to the DSC.  It is a terrific way to spend a spring day, visiting with your sailing friends and knowing you are contributing to a favorite cause.

Mark your calendars, and share with everyone in your contact list - Sunday, March 24, 2013.  We will be working with the manager of Bluegrass Tavern to finalize plans for the event in the coming days.

We're absolutely excited and hope everyone will join us for brunch (or supper) at Bluegrass Tavern!
