Fleet & Facilities Update
"Shipshape Snapshot!"
Fleet Update 022813

Key to above graphic which will be updated weekly illustrating progress on Fleet Maintenance:

Boats to the right of the, "finish line," are shipshape and ready for the launch of the DSC Sailing Season, commencing April 2013.

Green Boats: Access Dinghies

Blue Boats: Sonars

Yellow Boats: J/22s.

Fleet Update

Ahoy, Spring!

We are finally seeing daily highs near 50 degrees!

Tidewater has completed another two boats, and we have a total of 6 J/22s and One Sonar Back at the DSC with the new bottom paint. Two more J/22s have been stripped down, checked for damage, and are receiving paint today and Friday, and we will pick them up early next week after the paint cures.

The work doesn't end when the boats return to the dock, however. Every rig needs to be inspected; the masts must be stepped; and the rigs must be tuned. A further safety inspection has to be made before the boat is put back online, and the rudder must be prepped and painted before it can be reattached.

Don't forget to sign up for the work parties (see Calendar List above) and put some sweat equity into our fleet. We have been working hard but we need your consistent support to make these improvements.

Work begins this weekend on the Cruising Boats, too, so register for that event online if you are interested in helping and send an email to cruising@downtownsailing.org if you have any questions.

Spring is just around the corner, so don those work gloves and put on those dungarees!

Skipper Practice, Orientation and Checkouts

The warm weather is quickly approaching and it's time to shake the rust off of your sailing skills. The DSC believes it's important for every skipper to attend the checkout to learn procedures and illustrate the essential skills. We are offering three group checkouts dates to make the process easier and more manageable.

Keep in mind, it is mandatory for all skippers to be checked out by the final May 11th date.

Guidelines and rubric are now available online. Please check them out. If you score an 80 or better you will NOT have to complete a checkout in 2014.

To view these and other essential DSC documents, please Click Here to launch the DSC Resources Page.

To help you prepare for the checkout we are providing two on the water practice days.  So come to the work party then jump on a boat to practice your skills.

Click the following links to Register for the Checkout Prep Session of your choice:

Saturday, March 9th

Saturday, March 16th

Sign up now for one of the group checkout dates.  We strongly encourage you to bring a friend to make the process fun and enjoyable. If you are unable to make any of the following dates please email Stuart Proctor at  stuart@downtownsailing.org.

There will be a $20 scheduling fee for those who are unable to attend one of the group sessions.

Mustering DSC Racing Crew
Winch

Interested in racing this season? Then please attend the Racing Crew Meeting next Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 7:00 PM, to learn more about the program. There will be skippers present to explain the racing rules and procedures and to help you find a skipper match.  If possible, please bring a sailing resume describing your experience. Town Hall Meeting - Wrap Up

The Town Hall Meeting and social was a very nice event on Friday night.  Both returning and new members presented great suggestions. The board and staff provided more information regarding our 2013 budget and the plans for the season.  If you have any questions regarding the details of the meeting please email Lynn Handy lynn@downtownsailing.org.

March DSC Member Social
@ Bluegrass Tavern in Federal Hill
~ Sunday, March 24, 2013
DSC Brunch Gathering 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Each month, Bluegrass Tavern chooses a charity or organization to support by donating 10% of their total gross earnings for one day.

The Downtown Sailing Center is enormously grateful to be selected for the "Charity of the Month," in March.

We invite all of the DSC Members, Supporters, Friends, and Volunteers to pour through the doors of Bluegrass for Brunch, Lunch, or Supper, on March 24th.  Sample the venue's succulent and noteworthy menu options, impressive wine offerings and pairings, and smooth bourbons.  Information about Bluegrass can be found on their website.

While this is not a "typical" DSC Member Social, by attending and your purchase of food and beverage from the venue will result in a donation to the DSC.  It is a terrific way to spend a spring day, visiting with your sailing friends and knowing you are contributing to a favorite cause.

Mark your calendars, and share with everyone in your contact list - Sunday, March 24, 2013.  We will be working with the manager of Bluegrass Tavern to finalize plans for the event in the coming days.

We're absolutely excited and hope everyone will join us for brunch (or supper) at Bluegrass Tavern!
