  Annual Meeting

This Saturday is the Annual General Meeting. We will be covering topics that include programming, membership, budget and the DSC Strategic Plan. We hope you can join us for this positive discussion on the direction of the organization. To prepare for the session and to save trees we have included a PDF of the strategic plan and budget handout. Feel free to print out and bring to the meeting.

Skilled Volunteer Opportunities

The Downtown Sailing Center needs your help. If you are interested in volunteering to help with any of these positions please email volunteerism@downtownsailing.org.

Boat Donation Researcher/Canvasser

BACKGROUND:

A significant portion of DSC Revenue is derived from the acceptance (and subsequent sale) of donated boats. The Boat Acquisition process involves two stages. During the initial stage, research is performed to identify boats which are candidates for donation and have a reasonable expectation of meeting DSC boat donation standards. The second stage is to physically inspect boats whose owners have expressed an interest in making a donation. The DSC Office seeks a volunteer to serve as a Researcher/Canvasser in support of the initial stage of Boat Acquisition.

Writer/Editor: DSC Volunteer Handbook

BACKGROUND:

As part of its Orientation Program for Volunteers, the DSC has initiated a project to create a Volunteer Handbook. To date, all of the content envisioned for the Handbook has been gathered from various sources and incorporated into a single Word Document. What remains is to establish a meaningful outline for the Handbook, reorganize the content to fit the outline, and edit the content for consistent style. The DSC Office seeks a volunteer with writing experience to accomplish these tasks.

Bookkeeper/Analyst: Boat Expenditure and Reporting System

BACKGROUND:

Recently, the DSC Operating Budget has been organized to permit budgeted expenditure aggregation at the level of Operating Program. An Expenditure Accounting System is being developed to track specific expenditures made against these Program Budgets. The DSC Cruising Program seeks a volunteer to maintain data stored in the Expenditure System and to generate financial reports based upon these data.

DSC Fleet and Facilities Update

Dear DSC Community:

The Saturday Work Parties continue to achieve marked success even as the temperature drops and the weather deteriorates. A dozen volunteers prepared our day fleet for winter sailing this past week. Volunteers restocked the safety boxes, updated the USCG and DSC required equipment, and performed a general cleanup on the boats including the storage of the mainsails below decks. Meanwhile, Jammin's winches were serviced, the 15' whaler was trimmed out, and volunteers came down to work on both the access and cruising fleets.

Access dinghies were stored and secured for the winter. At the same time, further progress was made on access dinghy covers and replacement steering controls.

Cruising volunteers have been extremely diligent this winter, and volunteer-led work has commenced on eXcalibur and Sprite. The work continues this weekend: though it looks to be a cool and blustery morning, the air should be clear and dry for maintenance.

We recently came to a productive work arrangement with Tidewater Yacht Services and we are planning on using their expertise to refinish our boat hulls in a safe, sustainable, and productive fashion.

Part of Saturday's work goals involve preparing two J/22's for the journey around Fort McHenry and delivering them to Tidewater. Saturday is shaping up to be a fun day, with the Work Party from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, Frostbiting from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, and the Annual General Meeting slated for 5:00 PM.

Attend what you can (don't forget to register online), and I look forward to seeing each of you at the annual meeting!
