Downtown Sailing Center
Annual Meeting & Potluck Social
~ Saturday, January 19, 2013
5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
The Annual Meeting is next Saturday. We will be discussing the DSC strategic plan, programs and membership opportunities. Don't miss out on this informative session. The DSC board, council leaders and staff are looking forward to seeing you there.
Feel free to stick around after the meeting for our first social of 2013. Only a couiple of months to go until we're out on the water sailing in sunny summer breezes, but in the meantime, bring a favorite dish to pass (we will have electric available for crock pots, etc.) and gather for lively conversation and meet new members of the Downtown Sailing Center.
Please Click Here to RSVP for the Annual General Meeting and Potluck Social. |

US Sailing Grant
The Downtown Sailing is the lucky recipient of a 2013 US Sailing Powerboat Grant. With that grant the DSC will purchase a brand new engine for our newly donated Deckboat. This will allow the DSC to grow the size of our Powerboat Classes and give racers a new committee boat.
If you have experience installing engines, let us know! We would prefer not to outsource the labor to add the engine. Please email Lynn Handy at lynn@downtownsailing.org if you are interested. |

DSC Fleet and Facilities Update
Using the Fleet and Facilities Strategic Plan as our guide the DSC volunteers are working hard to get the fleet ready for sailing on April 1st. Here is our first fleet and facilities' status update for 2013:
Day Fleet:
The DSC is moving forward with our haul-out schedule to strive to have our entire day fleet updated with new bottom paint by April 1st. New bottom paint is mandatory maintenance for the safety and performance of our fleet. If you are available please volunteer for our upcoming work parties. It's a great way to meet new people and help the DSC!
With the great work from our volunteers some of our boats are now ready for 2013 including:
Sayonara which has new bottom paint and a completed repair. She is in the water.
The 15 foot whaler has new bottom paint and will be splashed at this Saturday's Work Party.
Jammin' is in the final steps of bottom paint updating and will be splashed next week.
Did you know that boat trailers need bi-yearly inspections just like your vehicle? It's true! The DSC is planning on having our trailers inspected next week. Once completed another boat will be hauled out the week of the 21st to be available for immediate maintenance. Two other boats will be be hauled out at the end of that same week.
Access Dinghy Fleet:
Kathy Buckley and Curt Weist have been researching the best way to develop and build covers for our access dinghies. These covers will provide additional protection for our fleet in the 2013 season. Kathy and Kurt have been working hard to find the most efficient cost and volunteer approach.
This Saturday's work party will be dedicated to preparing access dinghies for rub rail installation, steering upgrades and winter storage.
Cruising Fleet:
The Cruising Council is working towards developing a plan to haul and out prepare the fleet for the 2013 season. They are meeting tonight to discuss their winter maintenance plan.
If you are interested in getting involved in the cruising maintenance please email Lynn Handy at lynn@downtownsailing.org.
We will also be adding cruising work parties to the calendar in February. |

Winter Work Ahead (with spring weather)!
The weather looks like it is going to be excellent this Saturday so we should be able to accomplish a large number of tasks.
Jammin's hull will be stripped down to bare gelcoat and should be ready for barrier coating on Saturday. The weather should be warm enough to paint Jammin'.
We will also have perfect weather for taking care of some of our other basic fleet maintenance needs, such as checking to make sure the boats are dry, clean, and stored properly for winter sailing. We need take advantage of the fine weather to make sure our facility is clean and as safe as possible.
I also need your help to tackle a bit of heavy lifting, as our 15' Whaler had her hull completely refinished.
There will still be work to be done on the Access Dinghies including rub rail prep and I am working hard to have the Mary Anna prepared for some serious work.
I'll see you on the docks!
~Stuart
P.S. Next Saturday we will be prepping another J22 for a haul-out. So make sure to check the calendar and register. |
