Message from Dave Minges
DSC Executive Director
DSC Family and Friends:
Seasons Greetings! We hope you are all enjoying the hectic excitement of this time of year, yet also finding time to reflect on the basic goodness of life and people. It's been a year of change and challenge here at the DSC, and I have discovered so much goodness in the people and ideas that I've encountered - bit by bit - every day. I'm reminded of that classic folktale. Stone Soup (which makes a great gift for anyone anytime). In the story, three French soldiers of Napoleon's Grande Armee stumble west on the long, miserable retreat from Moscow. In the deserted square of an apparently empty village, they build a fire, draw water from the well, and set to boiling water. Suspicious but curious villagers peer from shuttered windows as the soldiers heave a large rock into the steaming cauldron.
Unable to contain his puzzlement, a small child ventures out and asks what in the world they could be cooking. Why, Stone Soup, replies the trio, in a delighted but matter-of-fact way. In a grand, French-chef gesture of testing the rocky broth, the soldiers muse - "Oh, this is good, but it would be so much better with just a little bit of carrot.....". Off darts the child, proudly returning with a withered carrot that they heartily welcome. One by one, bit by bit, the village families come out of their hiding places, each bearing ingredients from their cellars and larders, and before long, the pot overflows and the feast begins - the first joy and laughter in many war torn months. The soldiers and villagers part as friends, and the town inherits a no-fail recipe for the best and worst of times.
So thanks to all of you for your caring, passion, dedication, action on behalf of the DSC. Thanks to the Board of Directors for minding the helm . Thanks to the Donors and Contributors for the wind in the sails. Thanks to the Staff for running the programs, serving the members, and maintaining the fleet. Thanks to the work crews that clean and paint bottoms and tune rigging. And most of all, thanks to the Members and Volunteers who crew this wonderful enterprise, from founding fathers and mothers to the newest recruits. We are a rich, flavorful community sailing center because we share the special ingredients of our time, experience, and selves.
So when the weather finally gets colder, enjoy some hot soup and smile with your friends and family - and consider that while the Stone Horse is a classic New England flush decked sloop, Stone Sloop would be an unfortunate name for a J-22 on a Thursday night. Peace, safe journeys, and Happy New Year!

Message from Stuart Proctor
DSC Fleet & Facilities Manager
DSC Members and Volunteers, We had a successful and productive fall season. Thanks to your hard work, we completed a significant amount of fleet maintenance that puts us ahead of where we started last year. But even with all the accomplishments, there is still much more hard work to come. If you are interested in helping sand, prep, prime and paint the hulls of our boats please stay tuned to the Calendar in the new year and set aside a few weekends to put some elbow grease into the fleet. It takes a significant community effort to keep our costs as affordable as possible, and every additional volunteer hour will contribute to a more productive sailing season ahead. Thank you for all your hard work this season, and I look forward to sailing into the New Year with you! Have a wonderful Holiday season, ~Stuart |
