Message from Susan Pollack,
DSC Interim Executive Director

Dear DSC Community,

It is with enthusiam and great appreciation that I take on the task of serving the DSC as Interim Executive Director. The DSC has weathered many transitions in its nearly 18 years, and I believe that we will come through this most recent change successfully as well.

My job as Interim Director will be mainly to help the DSC achieve stability and sustainability - both fiscally and organizationally - while the Board conducts the search for a new permanent Executive Director.  As well, I will do my best to assist all the terrific DSC members, volunteers, staff, Board and program participants with the great programs and services that the DSC offers to Baltimore and the surrounding community.

Here are a couple of things that I want you to know:

1)    I've worked for the DSC earlier this year as a consultant, producing an Organizational Overview and Needs Assessment, and a Fund Development Plan, so I know quite a bit about the DSC as a nonprofit organization- its history, culture, current programs, fleet, facilities, budgets, etc.

2)    I am a member of the DSC. I have my own boat (a Pearson 323) in Edgewater so have not sailed here myself, but I believe in the DSC mission and am both a member and a donor. I'm proud to support the DSC. [ Please remember that when the Annual Appeal comes around; I'll be getting solicited at the same time you are! ]

3)    I will be working 25 hours per week only, mostly between 10-3 daily. If you need me, please email susan@downtownsailing.org or call the office at 410-727-0722 (press 4). I'll check messages when I am out of the office.

Thank you all for your welcome. I look forward to working with you.

Susan

In a new study, Kennedy Krieger Spinal Cord Institute has been actively using the V-Sail Simulator to help rehabilitate spinal patients. At the end of each 12-week session patients have the opportunity to come sailing at the DSC. The DSC experience gives family members and care givers an opportunity to share in the rehabilitation of their loved ones.

Fire Up the CrockPots!
DSC "Devilishly Spicy Chili" Cook Off
~ Saturday, October 27, 2012
6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Break out the family recipe for your best Chili, load up the CrockPot, and wow your fellow members and guests with your culinary prowess...

The DSC Member Social commences at 2:00 PM with sailing activities until Sunset (around 5:30 PM).  If you're sailing early and want to deliver your contribution to the Devilishly Spicy Chili - drop off your warming unit (CrockPot/Nesco, etc.) and a spoon with Traci and she'll keep it bubbling away while you sail.

We'll set the tables and feast from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM
for our "Beastly Feast."  The DSC will supply condiments and beverages.

For those attending the DSC Social and are not participating in the Chili Cook Off, your warm side dish (Mac & Cheese for example) or corn bread, taco dip, would be most welcome.

Creating Connections to Sail

The most efficient manner of getting out on the water from October to April is to create Skipper & Crew Member connections.

Fall and even into the winter through spring brings with it brisk winds and (hoped-for) "temperate" temperatures! Along with these great sailing conditions comes dwindling daylight. In order to help facilitate member sailing we have added this forum so members can openly communicate about sailing with one another.

Follow the link provided, subscribe (you'll receive email notification when someone posts a topic/request) and start connecting!
