More About Us

Thanks!

We are so grateful to our friends at Bentall Kennedy and all the tenants in their buildings. Their Beer and Wine tasting event raised $3600 for the Children's Cottage Society.

Tonic for a Cause

We are pretty excited about Tonic for a Cause happening this Saturday night at Hotel Arts. We are incredibly grateful to the event's organizers and sponsors, as well as to everyone who will be attending. There are a couple of tickets left so if you don't want to miss out on this amazing party, call our office and snag the last few tickets. You won't be sorry!

Looking for a Way to Give Back?

You can become a supporter of the Cottage and bring some friends, family or colleagues along with you. Consider turning your birthday party into a fundraising event for the Cottage. Or, if your energy runs a bit higher, consider organizing an event like a home party or a golf tournament, where participants get to have a fun time and give back to a worthy cause. Go ahead, get creative. Then contact us and we'll help you along with your plans.

Super Credit Tax Savings

Do you know someone - your child, your sister, your neighbor - who hasn't claimed the charitable donations tax credit on his or her tax return in the last five (5) years?

Then you need to share this information. The 2013 Federal Budget is offering a one-time Super Credit to encourage first-time donors. This credit means a first-time donor will be allowed a 40% federal credit for donations of $200 or less, and a 54% federal credit for the portion of donations over $200 but not
exceeding $1,000*.

Share this information with people you know today. The Super Credit is a
super idea!

Respite Care Makes a Huge Impact

Eight months ago, Marla could hardly get through a day without an overwhelming amount of tears, never mind a smile. Marla was enjoying a healthy pregnancy when her son, Lucas, began to get sick and lethargic, requiring many doctor's appointments and tests. Then not long after, her husband was laid off. Marla began to feel exhausted and hopeless; she had never felt stress like this before. Marla and her family had recently moved to Calgary from Europe and her family and friends were far away. With no family or friends to support her she worried about what would happen when her baby was born. With her husband still searching for work, her son still feeling unwell, and her own anxiety increasing, Marla gave birth to their little girl Isabelle.

Soon her husband found a job but it was a difficult transition requiring all his time and energy. Marla's feelings of anxiety, exhaustion and hopelessness increased. "I was so exhausted I couldn't feel anything. I wanted to be somewhere, anywhere else." A public health nurse recognized that Marla was struggling and isolated and put her in touch with the Children's Cottage Society, which resulted in her connection to the In-Home Infant Respite Program. Through this program, a respite worker would come to Marla's home for a few hours each week to provide Marla with support and a chance for some time for herself. At the first visit Marla finally, with the support she had been lacking, slept for nearly three hours while the respite worker cared for Isabelle.

In the months that followed, many positive changes began to happen for Marla and her family. Marla felt hope like she hadn't felt in months. Today when Marla opens the door she is smiling. She is eager to talk about how well she and her family are doing since being involved in the In-Home Infant Respite Program through the Children's Cottage Society of Calgary.

Junior Undiscovered Math Prodigies takes on Brenda's House
Every Tuesday, Tony Pasternak and his assistant volunteers arrive at Brenda's House to find eager students waiting for help with their math. Tony is trained in JUMPMath (Junior Undiscovered Math Prodigies) and approached Brenda's House in October 2011, desiring to help students. Now, students anxiously await his help and demand was so great that earlier this year he started to come Sunday mornings as well. Recently, Tony also discovered that his employer (Shaw) will donate $200 for every 60 hours he volunteers. To him this is just an amazing bonus for the work he's already doing. Students lives are being changed by Tony's generosity of time and talent.  Thank you Tony.
