What a mom!
| |
Recently a mom staying a Brenda's House moved out into the community. That alone is worth celebrating, but she needs to be praised for how she got to there. Margaret arrived at Brenda's House - a single mom, with a three month old baby and no Canadian status to get income. While living with us, Margaret received her Canadian citizenship and graduated ESL at the highest level. She obtained employment as a manager in a large department store and was able to move into the community and sustain housing for her and her son.

Royal LePage Garage Sale
| |
Last weekend, our friends at Royal LePage Benchmark held their annual garage sale to raise money for the Cottage. They worked hard to make it a success and seeing all the happy shoppers leaving, we think they did an amazing job once again. Thank you to every realtor at Benchmark who made it a success. Thanks also to the friends and family they brought in to help them and to everyone in our city who donated quality used items for the cause.

Super Credit Tax Savings
|
Do you know someone - your child, your sister, your neighbor - who hasn't claimed the charitable donations tax credit on his or her tax return in the last five (5) years?
Then you need to share this information. The 2013 Federal Budget is offering a one-time Super Credit to encourage first-time donors. This credit means a first-time donor will be allowed a 40% federal credit for donations of $200 or less, and a 54% federal credit for the portion of donations over $200 but not exceeding $1,000*.
Share this information with people you know today. The Super Credit is a super idea!

A story from Healthy Families
|
Recently, my client, a new immigrant to Canada, told me how hard it is to get her daughter Ami to eat. I suggested some finger food options so Ami could feed herself in her high chair. Mom did not realize the high chair was for eating -she had been using it to secure Ami while she showered or cleaned the kitchen (and the latter she did a lot because Ami was always trying to eat off the floor). Last week when I visited, she was so excited at all the new foods Ami had tried eating. I am so happy I could help this mom learn to provide even better care for her daughter.

Leaving an Abusive Situation takes Guts, Determination and Some Support...and we are happy to help!
| | |
Janet is a loving mom faced with a wide spectrum of challenges. She left her husband a few months ago, after being physically abused for years. She sought out a women's shelter when she left, to get a fresh start, and also began seeing a doctor. She was soon diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as well as anxiety issues. She came to the Crisis Nursery to get care for her daughter, Emily, while she re-established herself. While we cared for Emily, Janet was able to find a home to rent and to get settled. She is now seeking full time work and is successfully juggling the challenges of single parenting.
