Parent Quote

I just want to express my gratitude for the (in-home infant respite) program - it has made a real difference and helped me get back on my feet.

A Fresh Look Makes A Huge Difference

"When is the next sign-up sheet going up?"

"When are the hair stylists coming again?"cutting at BH

"Can I get my hair cut too?"

"Thank you for making me feel pretty."

"I just got my bangs cut, but it sure made me feel better."

"Just a trim and around the ears is all I want, is that OK?"

Once a month, hedkandi Salon sends two stylists to cut and style hair for the families staying at Brenda's House. For two hours, the stylists donate their time to cut, trim and style, making the day brighter for parents and children, many of whom haven't had the time or resources to worry about their hair in a while. These generous stylists have cut somewhere close to 160 heads of hair since they began in the summer of 2011!

hedkandi owner Jereme Bokitch has been asking his stylists to volunteer for many years. So, when the Children's Cottage Society Volunteer Manager asked him to consider expanding his community engagement (previously focused on just the Mustard Seed), he accepted the invitation. Bokitch and Carole Birch, Front End Manager at hedkandi, believe in giving back to the community and encourage their stylists to serve their community by sharing their talents and skills. Stylists are encouraged to volunteer at Brenda's House the second Thursday of each month, and there is never a shortage of volunteers. These stylists comment on how much they enjoy meeting the families and helping them feel better about themselves.

What's even more amazing to us is that this partnership with hedkandi stylists has grown beyond cutting hair once a month. Some of the stylists have expanded their volunteering, helping out at the Children's Cottage Society casinos, other fundraising events, and in our houses during the holidays. This past year, they purchased and donated Christmas trees and decorations for both the Crisis Nursery and Brenda's House and donated air time on a local radio station to raise awareness of the Children's Cottage Society.

To the team at hedkandi, the families at Brenda's House say: "Thank you very much!"

Healthy Families sees Another Success

It is such a pleasure to see a mom doing well - especially when it hasn't always been that way.  Lei, a mother of two, left an abusive relationship. However, leaving was only the first step in a challenging journey. Soon after going into shelter, Lei's baby began to suffer developmentally and her son became increasingly physically abusive towards her.  She tried to get life sorted out while still taking classes, and quickly became overwhelmed. She did not have the capacity to deal with her children and they kept getting worse - her baby began vomiting far too frequently, and her son's tantrums grew more frequent. Her situation seemed hopeless, especially when, even though she knew of the Children's Cottage Crisis Nursery, she was too busy to get her kids in.  Lei was referred into the Healthy Families program by her Public Health Nurse. We provided her with a home visitor who listens to her and helps her figure out next steps to take to improve her life and the lives of her children.

At our last visit, Lei looked great.  Her baby's new pediatrician has been helping with her health issues.  Lei has been receiving counseling and is learning new ways to deal with her son's tantrums. She says she is getting better at managing his outbursts. As well, Lei is able to focus on her schooling again and has met another mom, with whom she has begun childcare exchange. They are going to take turns watching the kids one weekend a month, so the other gets a break.  Last weekend, Lei's friend had her children and she was able to rest. She looked so much better than when I first met her. It is wonderful to see a mother begin to thrive.
