More About Us

A great partnership

A big thank you goes out to the Child Enrichment Centre for providing 16 hours of care to a family that required daycare during a family emergency this month.

Some Statistics

The Crisis Nurseries cared for 72 children from 50 families in February. 90% of these children were from single parent homes. 38% of parents listed exhaustion as their reason for turning to the Crisis Nursery; 12% were struggling with an illness; and 12% needed childcare to attend a meeting, appointment or job duty. The average length of stay for a child was 2.43 days.

March 2013

A Baby Sister for Jonah

Recently Jonah, a three year old little boy, came to stay with us at the Crisis Nursery. Mom was on her way to the hospital to have her baby and this little guy was very excited to meet his new sister. Wanting to support and encourage his excitement, staff helped him choose a new sleeper that he could give to his sister and he also made her a welcome home card. Jonah talked endlessly about the new baby and was fascinated with the little babies also staying at the Crisis Nursery. He was often found sitting in front of the swing or a bassinet staring at the babies with a look of wonder on his face. Mom delivered a healthy baby girl and returned to pick up Jonah. She has since reported back that Jonah is the "perfect big brother".

Turning Homelessness into Job Readiness

Brenda's House is a home for families in transition. Their time living with us is made so much easier by amazing volunteers who take time out of their busy schedule to make a difference in children's lives. Many individuals, groups, and organizations have done amazing work this month, including the Junior League of Calgary and Accenture

The women of the Junior League work hard each month to provide programming for all ages at Brenda's House. In addition to activities like coloring and framing artwork, making fresh fruit kabobs, and reading with younger children, these creative women came up with a really exciting option for our teens and tweens in February.  They offered the Babysitting course to those interested in taking it.  This was an incredible opportunity for older kids in the house, providing them with skills that will last a lifetime and perhaps earn them some income as well.

Accenture employees also helped our clients in the area of income and employment.  Volunteers from Accenture put on a workshop about resume building and how to start a small business. Twelve volunteers spent an inspiring evening with our clients and those who did not have resumes walked away with sparkling new ones to help land them a new job.

Our goal is to help families move into independent living and partners like the Junior League and Accenture make this possible. We are excited to see what new partnerships lie around the corner to benefit our clients.
