Visitor Guide Update

The Chamber staff is making slight revisions and updates to our Visitor Guide Brochure which we will be reprinting soon. This is our primary fulfillment piece for visitor requests by mail, used by our front desk crew at our visitor center and supplied to many other visitor centers in Oregon and Washington. You can view the previous version of the guide if you are not familiar with it. Especially if your business falls in the Food & Beverage, Lodging or Attractions categories, please take a moment to review your listing in the brochure or on our website. Reminder: This guide only lists active Chamber members, so if your membership dues are not current you won't be included. Or if you joined after our last printing, we'll be creating a new listing for your business in the new guide.

Deadline: August 10. Please provide your request in writing (email to Regina, mail a note, drop it by) so that we can incorporate it into our revisions.

NEW: Limited advertising space will be available in the reprint. Email Regina if you'd like to notified with the size and cost when it becomes available.
Get On the 2016 Clam Bucks List!

Clam Bucks are a great way to entice runners/walkers to visit your business around the Great Columbia Crossing 10k. This year's event will be held on Sunday, October 16. After October 19, participating businesses that accepted Clam Bucks can return them to the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce for a refund of $0.50 each. Small Business Management Program Scholarships Available
The Small Business Management Program at Clatsop Community College's Small Business Development Center is an intense, comprehensive 10-month program for established business owners in which YOUR business is the textbook. SBM covers key management topics, helping you identify and prioritize company goals, devise a plan to achieve them, and execute your plan. Far beyond lectures, participants take their businesses up a notch every month. Tuition of just $695 includes all materials, monthly class sessions, and one-on-one advising in your business.

Your Chamber Ambassadors want to make it easier for members to participate in SBM program by paying half your tuition, but you have to hurry. Just send a short note stating why you want to be part of this year's SBM program. Up to three scholarships will be awarded. Email your note to Ambassador President Brandon Kraft by August 19, and don't forget to apply to the SBM program itself on the CEDR website by the same date. First class is September 1.

Aquatic Center Slide Has Reopened!
In June, maintenance staff at the Astoria Aquatic Center noticed that the strainer basket housing and lid for the waterslide pump had cracked and was causing cavitation in the pump. This was due in part to the nearly-twenty year old pump system's check valves failing, allowing a "water-hammer" effect to damage components and forcing staff to close the slide due to safety concerns. The good news: a new pump and check valve assembly was ordered and installed in the end of July. The slide is now back to its regular operation.

Beware of False Soliciting
The Astoria High School Athletic Department is being misrepresented. Sports Media is selling advertising space on a "winter sports calendar" for Astoria High School. The very fine print states that they are not affiliated with the school. Sports Media has not been authorized to represent Astoria High Athletics in the solicitation of advertisements for calendars, schedules, programs, etc. The AHS Athletic Department will continue to deal directly with local businesses and community members for the support of our programs. Please do not agree to support any outside agency soliciting on behalf of the AHS Athletic Department. Please contact AHS Athletic Director, Howard Rub via email at [email protected] or via cell phone (503) 298-9419 if you have questions or concerns.
