Firsts and Lasts
As we prepare to celebrate Easter, the Ketterman family is preparing to observe an anniversary of a different kind.  It has been a year of firsts for the family, and in reflecting upon this, Tammi and Dan had some thoughts they would like to share:
"Last Sunday Dan and I were invited to have waffles at our oldest daughter's home.  As we were talking with the grandkids, I heard myself say, "You always remember your first and your last".  I caught my breath as I realized that it has been a year of just that.

Our daughter Hattie went to be with Jesus on April 10, 2013.  I look back at this year without her and remember all of the "firsts". We celebrated our first holidays without her, experienced our first vacations without her, and made new memories without her.  Now, the "lasts" seem daunting.  The last time we were all together, the last time I hugged her, the last time I said I love you, the last time she said "I love you Mommy".  Those "lasts" are precious to me and all those who loved her.  I'll be honest, I don't remember the first time I told Hattie I loved her, but I vividly remember the last time I saw her face register those words from me. We all have only one chance at a first and you never know in some things when it will be the last, so we need to make the most of both.

I have been blessed to be surrounded by a loving and forgiving family.   I have been encouraged by compassionate and sympathetic friends.  We have been upheld by the prayers and thoughts and kindnesses of a very special community.  Thank you for the meals, gifts, cards, plants, and loving words.  Everyone has been so very gracious.  Thank you for being there as part of our firsts and lasts."

Last March, the girls and the grand-babies went to Cars Land in California.  Katie was pregnant with Will, so she couldn't make it, but Dillyn, Tammi, Ellyn, Hattie, Brinn, Sam, Richi, Reese and Jackie had a great time together.
It has been a different sort of year, but it has taught our family the importance of time together and reconciliation, both with each other and personally.  Is it important to care of each other, love each other and make your feelings known to each other, especially in matters of eternity.

"Hattie is in heaven, I am absolutely certain of that.  She is talking with Jesus, telling him all about her Josh, and us, and you.  Hattie is now perfect and healed and with her first love.  When all is said and done, He is the First and the Last, the Alpha and the Omega.  Put Jesus First, He is all that Lasts."

Be Blessed, you are a blessing.

A New Tradition    As most families do, the Ketterman's have a Christmas Eve tradition.  Although this has changed over the years with additions to the family and various careers, the family typically spent the day together working at the store and then went to dinner and met at Mom and Dad's for "NBC" (Night Before Christmas) Gifts.  A snowy 2012 softened the adjustment to a very different 2013.  Instead of sticking to what we had done in the past, we did something different (but hopefully not to be repeated).

This past Holiday season at the store, the Ketterman family was missing  a second family member.  Lynda Buck was admitted to the hospital just after Thanksgiving and remained there through mid January.  She was there waiting for a new heart.  On Christmas Eve, the family worked at the store together, as usual, and then, to cheer Ms. Lynda, we had the entire staff make a video singing a carol in the Brighton Room.  She loved it, but what she didn't know was that a small group of us were headed to the hospital to sing to her again, and that we would end up in her room by the end of the night.  A hospital is not likely the place anyone would want to spend Christmas Eve, but it was so wonderful getting to see Ms. Lynda and sharing that small bit of joy on such a difficult day.
See the video here.
The best news is, in January, Lynda did receive her her new heart.  This is a difficult thing to process, but one person's sacrifice has allowed Lynda to continue her vibrant life, and has given us more time to enjoy her.  We are so thankful for that and want others to be able to enjoy the same opportunity.   Ketterman's is hosting a donor drive to raise awareness and support for organ donation.  Saturday, April 12, join us to check if you are a donor, and if you aren't you can sign up.  We have also partnered with Virginia Blood Services to host a Blood Drive from 11:00-3:00.  Have a Heart - Give Hope.

Rosy Rings

Shannon Cumberland started making candles as a hobby over fifteen years ago.  She worked in her basement with a small crock pot, bees wax, essential oils and botanicals she dried in a dehydrator.  After losing her job as a bike messenger, she decided to make candles full time.  Her first success, and still a best seller, was the original Spicy Apple Botanical.  In the span of one year, two trade shows took the business from the basement to a 4,400 square foot production building.
Apricot Rose Candle
"Since those humble and, quite honestly, very exciting days things have changed a lot. We moved into our current 15,000 square foot facility. We buy wax by the ton instead of by the case. I own a forklift."
Lavender Tangerine Diffuser
All Rosy Rings products are completely hand made in Denver, CO using the same methods as when Shannon started.  Each candle is hand stuffed and poured and is actually two candles made of two different waxes, allowing the outer candle housing the botanicals to remain intact  throughout the burn.
Black Vetiver and Oak
Wax Sachet
"Living in an urban area and working in an industrial corridor I understand how difficult it can be to connect to the beauty of nature. Candlemaking has always been a way for me to bring elements of the outdoors into my home. A scoop of lavender, a humble bowl of dried leaves or an illuminated botanical candle are all small reminders of the beauty the natural world offers us."

Fun Fact...
