The Gift of Giving
First Fruits - In the side-bar of every All Ways newsletter, there is a brief note about Ketterman's First Fruits. Dan and Tammi began this endeavor about ten years ago at the direction of a passage in Exodus, "Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God." So, the first business day of each month, ten percent of the money taken in goes to a designated charity. The family meets, prays and discusses the upcoming year and the charities to be considered to develop their list of twelve worthy causes to highlight through each year's program. To see the list of Ketterman's 2013 First Fruits Ministries and to learn more about them, visit the Events Page on the Ketterman's website.
Ketterman's Apprentice
This fall, Ketterman's marked the introduction of Ivanka Trump to our family of designers with a "Ketterman's Apprentice" competition. Much like the television show, nine individuals participated, each with a team of 24 guests to raise money for their selected charity. Teams could earn money for their charity by participating in events and making purchases during the competition period.
Margaret Galles won the title of Ketterman's apprentice by, along with her team, earning the most money for her charity - Capital Caring Hospice. It was a fun (and different) way to launch a new line. Ketterman's would like to especially thank the Apprentices and their team members for their participation and support. Ketterman's has been so blessed to contribute to local and national philanthropies through these programs and the support of our customers. We are excited to move forward into 2013 with the hope of another successful year. |

Are you Sentimental or Practical?
There are two types of gift givers in the world: Sentimental and Practical. One gives creatively, not always making sense, but carefully selecting the gift because it reminds them of the recipient, or they think he/she will like it. The other gives underwear - something everyone needs and is sure to be used.
To the sentimental giver, gifts aren't meant to be practical. They are meant to express a sentiment. Gifts are to say, "Thank you," or "I love you," or "I'm thinking of you." To the sentimental giver, gifts have a deeper meaning. We have all received a gift from one of "those" givers that makes us say, "What the heck am I going to do with this?" or "I need another ____ like a hole in the head." If you're a practical gift giver, you probably exchanged it for something more useful, re-gifted, or donated it. If you're a sentimental giver too, you've probably got quite an eclectic knick-knack shelf.
I had a college roommate who gave me a potpourri burner. You place potpourri in the dish on top and and burn a candle under it so the scent fills the room. I had never used it, and figured I probably never would, so a few months ago I had it in a bag destined for goodwill. Somehow it didn't get donated and ended up back on top of my wardrobe collecting dust. That roommate passed away suddenly in November. I know it's a silly thing, but I'm so glad I kept such an impractical gift to remind me of her and how great she was. It's like a gift every time I see it, to remember our time together.
So, to practical and sentimental gift givers alike, the next time you look at that decorative set of measuring spoons, your collection of random Christmas ornaments, or the potpourri burner/dust collector on your dresser, remember the giver and what you mean to them. Maybe next time you'll give something a little less practical.

Feature Product
-Grandmother's Buttons-
In 1985 Susan Davis and her grandmother spent an afternoon sifting through her 95-year-old accumulation of buttons. A sparkling jet button caught Susan's eye and when her grandmother agreed it would make a lovely earring, Grandmother's Buttons came to be. | | Susan and her mother, Miriam. |
In 1989 the business had been so successful that Susan's husband, Donny, gave up farming and became the company's business manager. In 1995 the couple bought and renovated the historic St. Francisville 1905 bank building in Louisianna. The workshop and studio are on the second floor with the main floor as a retail shop and museum. Dan and Tammi toured the factory and museum as an excursion on their Mississippi River Boat Cruise this past May.

Each piece is handmade with antique or vintage buttons trims and findings collected from all over the world. Susan and Donny continue to enjoy collecting and designing, and Susan's mother, Miriam enjoys acting as the company's top model for the jewelry. Each piece becomes a wearable piece of art and history, always upholding the company's motto, "honor the button."
