Family Owned and Operated Since...

Alwand Vahan is a sterling silver and gold jewelry line designed for sophistication and wearability.  Alwand Vahan, known as Sacha, is a third generation jewelry designer.  His grandfather started his business as a high-end custom jewelry designer for international clients in France.  His son, Sacha's father, took over the business and ran it until the late 1950s.  In 1968, after graduating the same Paris jewelry and design school  as his grandfather and working for several upscale jewelry firms, Sacha began his own company in New York, which is the Alwand Vahan we know today.

The line is based on their stackable bracelets that can be custom sized to fit each wrist, and the coordinating earrings and necklaces are equally  stunning.  Sacha says, "I create jewelry like I would a film set: with mood, drama, and my customers wear the jewelry like actresses...I want them to be observed, envied, and admired." In the past few years, the jewelry has gained a strong presence in celebrity wardrobes, including Jennifer Lopez, Bette Midler, Jennifer Hudson, and more.

Ketterman's started with Alwand Vahan seven years ago at the Las Vegas JCK Jewelry Show.  We were first drawn to the booth by the beautiful back-lit photos of their jewelry in piles of fruit - blueberries and raspberries. When asked about the photos, the representative informed us that the photos had been taken by Sacha's son on the family's kitchen table, using anything in the refrigerator as a backdrop.  It definitely sounded like something the Ketterman's would do and that sold us, along with the jewelry being beautiful and well made.  We look forward to continuing to support this fellow family business for years to come.

Blue and White Diamonds -
rough cast and final piece from
Don Conkey Designs

Don Conkey & Sons was established

by Mr. Conkey in 1977 in Pittsburgh, PA, with the hope of "creating the best value, quality, service, and selection of diamonds and precious gemstone jewelry in the United States."  The Conkey's have been working with the Ketterman's for over 25 years, starting with Mr. Ketterman's father, Richard Ketterman at his store in Vienna, VA.  They have lived up to their goal, continuing to meet Ketterman's customer's needs for quality and design.  Most of Ketterman's Conkey pieces are found in the semi-mounts cases (for engagement rings and re-mounts), but also in out colored stone jewelry.  Don Conkey is also frequently called upon for custom work and design.

The company is still run by Mrs Conkey Sr., Don Jr., his brother Jeff, sisters Lois Pulino and Amy Santucci, and cousin Roy.  With Don Jr.'s daughter, Denae Wylie as a designer, they are truly a family run business.  Like Ketterman's, the Conkey's can be found working at the business on a regular basis, and having one of them answer the phone is a common occurrence.  They truly have an "all hands on deck" level of service that they pass along to Ketterman's - our company representative has been seen behind the Ketterman's counter during the Christmas rush.

The Kettermans and Conkeys strive to uphold the same level of integrity, customer service and quality, making an excellent pairing for serving the jewelry customers of Northern Virginia.  The Ketterman family and some of our jewelers have visited the Conkey factory in Pittsburg and seen first hand the parallels between these two businesses, and look forward to our continued partnership.

Family news
This has been a year of remembrances, and an especially difficult past week.  With the passing of Mrs. Neysa Ketterman in March, the family realized the legacy started by Dan's parents, and the importance of carrying that legacy in a way that would make Mr. and Mrs. Ketterman Sr. proud.
The year began with the loss of a dear friend, Charlie Cockerill the father of both Ketterman's Manager Becky Malcheff and son-in-law Josh Cockerill.
More recently, the Ketterman's son-in-law, John, lost both grandparents, Elwood Smith "Mac" McClintic, on September 9, 2012 , and his grandmother,  Alice Mae Reis McClintic on Sunday, October 27.  Mr. Mcclintic served 30 years in the United States Navy and Mrs. Mcclintic served as his beloved wife for nearly 70 years.  In John's words, "The company of people who were as faithful, dedicated, kind-hearted, selfless, honest, tolerant, and servant-hearted is small indeed... They say, behind every good man is an even better woman. No truer words were ever spoken regarding Mammaw's support of Poppop."
Most recently, the family is grieving the loss of son-in-law Josh Curtis's mother, Barbara Curtis.  She was hospitalized Sunday for a hemoral stroke and went Home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, October 30.  She was "a mother of 12 who lived to write about it."  As an avid writer, speaker, and blogger, she encouraged many "mommies" in the importance of raising their children with integrity and values.  Her legacy lives on in her children and grandchildren, all of whom were loved to the fullest every day of her life.

It is easy to get caught up in life and the busy-ness that we create for ourselves.  In the loss of so many great molders of our lives, we realize we need to be thankful for our loved ones and remember the hearts that have brought ours together.
Feature Product
-Nina Nguyen -

One of Ketterman's newest designers has a very earthy feel to her jewelry.  The line features geodes, stalactites, and fossilized ammonites - natural stones set in sterling silver and 22 karat vermeil.
Nina designs the pieces in her Colorado studio and then they are expertly handcrafted by skilled artisans at Nina's Women's Co-Operative in Vietnam.  The all-female Co-Operative provides business opportunities that enrich the lives of Vietnamese women and their families.

When Dan and Tammi met the designer in Atlana, she told Mrs. Ketterman that she used to accept any pronunciation of her last name, but that she had started correcting people, as she expected to be a household name one day, and that it is pronounced
 "Neenuh Win".
