Cooler Weather Increases Carbon Monoxide Risks
New Roofs Are Also Adding Concern for Poison Center
As the cooler temperatures arrive on the High Plains, more homes will be starting their fire places and heaters, increasing the risks of carbon monoxide.
"We need to think about carbon monoxide really but particularly during winter when we are going to turn on appliances that use gas, natural gas or propane that we haven't turned on in a while," said Ronica Farrar with the Texas Panhandle Poison Center. Larry Davis with the Amarillo Fire Department says along with running gas appliances and starting fires, even warming up your car can be a risk.
"Another source if you have an attached garage to your house and you just start your car to pull it in or out, that can also bring carbon monoxide into the home," said Davis. Farrar says the winter time is always busy for them but this year might even be worse... "We anticipate having more carbon monoxide calls this year than usual because of all the new roofs in the area," added Farar.
She says in some cases, roofers covered up vents on homes making the gas vent into the home, instead of outside. Farrar and Davis both recommend all homes make sure they have detectors and the batteries are up and running. Davis also says if you alarm goes off, try to get air through the home by opening windows and doors.
Call the fire department and wait outside.
