This Week's Report Commentary

This week the EIA inventories report has propane at 45.8 million barrels. That's an improvement over the stagnation of the last few weeks, but it's still far behind what's needed to meet the incoming foreign trade demand.

Remember, last year we had a shortage while the propane inventories were at a similar level. In previous years that amount would've been more than enough, but LPG exports doubled from 2012 to 2013 as trade opened up to Latin American countries.

With the Panama Canal expansion project, we're going to see an even larger market interested in our energy exports. China, India and Southeast Asia, with almost 4.5 billion people, are waiting for our 70 cents per gallon cheaper propane and those countries are already producing or acquiring the very large gas carrier vessels needed for immediate trade through the canal.

This could all happen as early as October when the canal expansion is expected to be finished, and our current inventory isn't nearly enough to last through that kind of boost in trade.
