To avoid price spikes, propane officials say buy now
SPRINGFIELD, Mo -- -
Almost a quarter of a million homes in Missouri run on propane.
Most of those residents don't think about how much they have until winter is closer, or they run out but propane officials say you should check your level now.
Last year people in the Show-Me State used about 275 million gallons of propane.
It can get expensive, especially when prices spike like it did over the winter.
Propane officials say it nearly tripled in price. That's why they are encouraging people to contact propane companies now and not wait until the colder months.
"The best thing for our customers is to top off their tanks during the summer because those prices are generally discounted. They should also utilize programs that lock in the price," said MFA Oil Spokesperson Tom May.
May says the average family uses about 500 gallons of propane each year.
