Why crude oil prices went up this week and why you should fill up now!
If you have room in your home tank now, then fill it up now. The reason is simple. A combination of the tension in Ukraine and rising exports are causing crude oil prices to go up.So if you haven't filled up your tank, you're going to want to lock-in now to avoid price hikes. Crude oil prices have already risen $1.11 from last week on the West Texas Intermediate. $4.55 up from last year. ( eia.gov 5/13/2014) The CausesExports are going up. For example, Targa Resources will be exporting 2 million additional barrels of propane per month this summer as a result of their expansion project in Mont Belvieu, TX. That's a 40% increase in their output. The situation in Ukraine has gotten worse. Troops from the government in Kiev continue to move in on Russian-separatist groups that have taken over eastern regions of Ukraine. The standoff between the U.S. and Russia over the conflict in Ukraine is providing some uneasiness to the market. Then there's also an inventory issue stateside. Oil stockpiles in Cushing, Oklahoma fell to a new low to 23.4 million barrels. That's the lowest level it's been since Dec. 2008.
What this all shows is that the fuel buying season is starting a little earlier this year. Fuel prices follow the direction of crude oil and that includes propane. So it's time to plan ahead and fill up your home tank before more market volatility brings prices up.
